    Thoughts on NFL OT?

Id like to see a 1st team to score 6 rule implemented.

In the game the other night, When Sproles scored the TD it would be game over. However had Indy held them to a FG, then they get a chance to win, tie, or punt away and play defense.

The traditional folks might hate it, but it does give the coin toss winner the advantage to finish off the game with 1 drive.

    6 points = OT win.

i'd like to hear different ideas/thoughts....

I wouldn't be opposed to that necessarily, but I don't want to see it go to a college format. It would cut down on playing for FGs more.

    Re: Thoughts on NFL OT?

I'd prefer a modified version of the college/high school method. 1st and 10 from the 25 is too close, so make it 1st and 10 from the 40 (or maybe 1st and goal from the 25).

    Re: Thoughts on NFL OT?

I can't get on board with that. Either leave it as is or change it to the college rule that both teams get a chance with the ball. But instead from around midfield.

I'd rather see it modified than left alone - but I do not like the "first to score 6" at all.

I agree with the midfield sentiment for college. It is currently like HS too much and I don't like it. Personally (really unpopular choice here I know), I wouldn't mind allowing ties.

    Re: Thoughts on NFL OT?

For the NFL, I think just continuing the game where it is with no game clock would work. It would still be sudden death - a little more like soccer.

    Re: Thoughts on NFL OT?

Why don't they just play an extra 10 mins, and most points after 10 mins wins. If no one scores, or if tied, another 10 min over time.

    Re: Thoughts on NFL OT?

I think instead of sudden death, they should just play another timed period, maybe 10 minutes or something. That way it's probably long enough to ensure that both teams get at least 1 possession.

    Re: Thoughts on NFL OT?

I've got no problems with NFL overtime as is. If a team couldn;t win it in regulation, and can't stop a team from getting into fg range, then they don't deserve to win. No reason to prolong it.

Now the college OT is just ridiculous.

    Re: Thoughts on NFL OT?

How about this: Play the OT period like a normal quarter, and the first team to gain possession while they hold the lead wins. Say Team A scores a TD on their first possession, they'd kick off and Team B gets one series to score a TD, and if B scores a TD they kick off and keep playing as normal. Or A could score a FG, B could respond with a TD, and A would get a chance to score a TD. I think that could be fun, but maybe make the games too long.

    Re: Thoughts on NFL OT?

    Greag Easterbrook advocates the following:

    full 15-minute quarter

no kicking - no punts, field-goal attempts or PATs

score at the end wins, if still tied - 6th quarter would be sudden death

teams would be forced to be aggressive - going for it on 4th down, going for 2pt conversions and aiming for the endzone.

Wow. That really is a great idea. I like it. Remember playing Tecmo Super Bowl and you always had to go for 1 after scoring a TD? That sucked.....it took the NFL forever to change that little rule....remember? They need to get this OT changed to something meaningful and up-to-date. Let's call that punk Goodell and get it implemented!
