    Re: 09 Roster

Anyone else hoping Haughton will get a go at DL this year under the new staff? Maybe the old staff did it, but I really think he could be a stud DT, and we seem to have a little more depth on the OL.

I thought someone said Franklin was petitioning for a medical hardship waiver? Or am I just imagining things again?

I don't see W Franklin listed. Maybe someone monitors this site and corrected an error.

Appears that he was removed from the first time I saw the list.

No. If you think we have "a little more depth" on the offensive line, I'd have to disagree. We're still struggling on the OL. We need about a half dozen more Scott Haughtons--just on the offensive line.

And we actually do have a little depth at DT.

    Re: 09 Roster

Did Hammerschmidt play last year?? He's listed as a soph, Knapp is also listed w/o a #, probably not a good sign for him playing next year

I guess we'll see how quickly that one is "fixed".

Also interesting to see the guys listed without the "RS" with their class, who redshirted at juco.

If by little depth you mean virtually no depth and very little experience, I agree with you. Here were our DL starters two years ago:

    B. Braaksma
    A. Rubin
    K. Taylor
    R. Parker

Here are my projected DL starters in 2009:

    S. Ruempolhamer - 8 career tackles
    B. Johnson or J. Black - combined 11 career tackles
    C. Lyle - 47 career tackles
    R. Parker - 73 career tackles

So I'd say our DL is in about as bad of shape as it's ever been in terms of returning experience. And we have NO defensive line commits for 2009. Are you sure about Haughton staying on the OL?

No, I mean that we actually have a little depth of talent at DT. I say what I mean.

DT: Nate Frere Sr, Jerrod Black So, Stephon Ruempolhamer So
DT: Bailey Johnson JR, Austin Alburtis JR, Jake McDonough RFR

Considering that for many years we played with converted offensive linemen or tight ends at defensive tackle, this actual three deep (as I said, assuming all are healthy) is what I call a "little depth"--and one hell of a lot better than the nonexistent quality depth on the offensive line.

As a matter of fact, I'd go so far as to say that we have four or five quality athletes on the offensive line. Can you make a quality starting unit, let alone a two deep, out of four players? And Haughton is decidedly one of them, one who might well make a difference for what should be a powerful offense.

Which, frankly, I see no reason to handicap by moving likely it's best lineman to defense.

Don't all teams have at least 6 guys who can line up at the DT positions? Likewise, we have 15 guys who are listed on the roster at the OL positions. I'm concerned about the lack of talent and/or experience returning at DT. Frere has 35 career tackles in 32 games. Contrast that production with Brent Curvey who had 176 tackles in his first three seasons. I'd love to be proven wrong, but I just don't see Frere as having that X factor.

Out of the guys you listed at DT, all of them have seen gametime action except for McDonough. Have any of them shown the ability to be the next Curvey? B. Johnson and J. Black are both still fairly young and have battled injuries so I'm hoping one of them can step up big time. Otherwise, there's not much to get excited about on the DL. We'll just have to hope two or three guys are ready to step up or our defense will be very average again in 2009.

Edit: I shouldn't have said our 2009 defense will be very average again. That would be giving our 2008 defense too much credit.

With Mac's early teams, he was scraping to find two guys to line up at the defensive tackle positions. Even late, he rarely played more than two--because there just wasn't anyone else.

And at least all of these six were originally scholarship players, and most have at least a few snaps under their belt. You have to start somewhere.
