Biggest Problem with Defense last Year

What did everyone think was the biggest problem with the Defense last year??? Does the fault go more to the coaches for the formations or is it just the skill level at certain positions??

To me I thought a lot of fault was at the Safety and Linebacker positions, I think we need to be a lot quicker there to effectively cover the potent spread offenses we have to face in the Big 12.

Getting pressure on third down... If they did stats for 1st and 2nd down we would probably be solid but QBs had all day to throw on third down...

I could have beat our defensive backs by 20 yards. Everytime we played on T.V. the other team would throw a bomb and you could not see our D-Back in the picture untill the guy slowed up at the endzone.

Coverage across the middle be it by the LBs or the safeties.

Absolutely NO pass rush...our secondary definately had weaknesses, but when a quarterback has time to sit in the pocket for 5-7 seconds-he's going to pick you apart...

No pressure from the cornerback position. No physicality from them trying to disrupt routes ever, not even an attempt.

Totally agree with this, I think our corners were young, and could take some of the fault but coverage over the middle was horrible. Will have a bigger impact this year with Ash back in the reign.

Not tackling nor in any other way preveting other teams from scoring was a rather glaring issue...

DL- No pass rush from the DL. None. This caused us to blitz and we got burned. I can't begin to count how many times the opposing team threw to wear we vacated from the blitz.

Fix the DL and get a pass rush from the front four and your LB's and CB's are better in pass coverage. Don't get a pass rush and it doesn'tmatter who you have covering the receivers.
Anybody notice that we got turnovers against SDSU our lesser opponents when we could get a pass rush and cause poor passes?

    It all starts up front!

Re: Biggest Problem with Defense last YEar

The team looked horrible on defense in the first few games of '07.

Then they inserted Chris Brown, a converted corner, after all of the safeties on the roster had failed rather majestically. Brown stabilized the defense with his form tackling and quickness, being in the right place at the right time.

Not a great defense, but the bleeding was stopped.

On the next to last play of Spring Practice, Chris blew out a knee. Expecting to have Chris around for his senior year, the staff had addressed other needs in recruiting.

Without Chris, the team was left with the same safeties who had failed (in capital letters), the previous year, before he assumed the position. These guys, while (having bulked up) hitters, were neither quick, agile, nor maneuverable. Lots of times receivers just circled around them, while they struggled to pivot and change direction.

Not just bleeding, the team started hemorrhaging points.

Chris came back, late in the year, starting for the first time against CU. Oddly enough, with him in there, several people noted that we suddenly had a pass rush. At least, until Chris went down again in the second half.

Apparently having a safety who can make a quarterback have to wait an extra second or two before throwing is a good thing. Who woulda thunk?

Failure of coaching staff to recognize the problematic issues and restructure/adjust the defense as necessary. If we play a cover 2 or a tampa 2 all of the time it is pretty easy to create an offensive game plan that takes advantage of the gaps.
