How tough are we to prepare for?

So, we're just about to dive into Big XII play. If you were an opposing coach, how difficult would it be to prepare for playing the Cyclones? We are just starting to show a few more dimensions to our game beyond Brackins and some three point marksmen.

Are you more concerned about preparing to:

    1. Stop Brackins
    2. Defend against the 3pt shooters
    3. Stop Diante from driving the lane
    4. Out coach GMac
    5. Other

We are easy, stop Brackins, stop ISU.

If I am a Big 12 coach, I sag on Brackins in a tight zone (which will, incidently, help to stop Diante from driving) and force ISU to hit the outside shots. I think we have the weapons out there to break a zone, but we'll see how consistent they can be with it.

We are tough to prepare for because a different team shows up most nights. You never know who will be hot or cold, or who will step up at key moments. Our unknowns is what will help us I think.

True......how many different leading scorers have we had? It's got to be 5 or 6.

I am grumpy because the bball team is not as good as people are talking about on here. Once they start facing some real competition, they are going to get spanked.

This is true, but we have shown signs of being less spankable lately. I really think the key has been Hamilton. Brackins has been passing out of the double teams for easy shots for Hamilton. Ham's rebounding has been an added bonus. Having another post presence seems to have made a big difference for this team.

P.S. Hamilton is my new favorite Cyclone. He seems humble, hardworking, and eminently coachable.

Re: How tough are we to prepare for?

I think we will see most Big 12 teams go zone on defense. I've seen very little out of our zone offense so far this season.

By doing this they will be able to sag in on CB and when we see the zone our G's aren't looking to penetrate and kick so that eliminates that aspect.

They will try to push the tempo against us and make it a running game. If that happens I feel like we are outmatched most nights.

Not much to your theory here. Craig only had 4 pts and 5 reb on 2-6 shooting last time out and i believe we still won. Though it was against a horrible team it still proves that others can step up if Craig doesn't score. As far as how to prepare for us, two of our losses this year have come against teams who pressure the ball handler, are quick at closing out on our shooters, and have a good post defender (See Drake and Iowa games). They can sag in the lane and still get out w/a hand up since the pressure on the ball helps slow down the passes and their post defender was able to hold Brackins long enough for help to come. I wasn't able to see the Hawaii or SDSU games but they both sound like they were more on being outcoached then any other factor.

Re: How tough are we to prepare for?

One thing I thought we would see more of this year is a high-low game w/Brackins and either JVB, Hamilton, or Thompson. It seems if we could get one of them at the high post and utilize the other on the block it would be a lot harder for teams to double team the post and still be able to cover the shooters on the wings.

I think that'll happen as the guys get more comfortable in the low post, since Brackins showed last year that he could play that very well from the high post.

Since we are an elite team now, let's go get that One Cyclone Moment.
Make this one for the ages!

Re: How tough are we to prepare for?

If you run a 3/4 press against ISU and then run a decent zone defense, you should be able to beat ISU. Play very physical on both ends, and you are probably guaranteed a victory. I love the Clones, but we are still pretty soft. Drake put on the press and took away a win we had in the bag. I have not seen anything that shows we can handle a team that plays pressure D.

The losses sucked but why does everbody just assume, we didn't learn anything about ourselves? The real mistake is made if we don't correct it.

I expect our three point shooting to get better, so we may get tougher.
