Should Non-BCS schools form their own league with a playoff?

With Utah doing everything possible to prove they deserve a title shot and not getting it, we've learned the BEST a non-BCS team can do is get to an at-large BCS bowl. With that in mind, why don't all of those other conferences form their own playoff? It would make for some great games and then one of those teams could actually play for a championship.

I think the significance of a playoff like that would be less than they can achieve from the current state of affairs. The championship would be an also ran bowl of sorts. I prefer for them to strong arm the NCAA into a real playoff.

It's been done before - it's called the FCS (formerly I-AA).

Considering teams choose to make the "jump" from FCS to FBS all the friggin' time for monetary reasons, I highly doubt many of the schools would be willing to do that, since they won't enjoy the corporate sponsorship that FBS has.

Bingo...those teams will make more money appearing in a BCS game then they ever will in their own playoff system.

It would solve a lot of problems with the system, and probably make a playoff possible for the BCS conferences.

I highly doubt anyone would care, though. If the best POSSIBLE game that you could come up with would be Boise State-Utah this year - and it's unlikely that you'd see that matchup - would you really want to sit through 16 games, say, of mid-major football? Might as well watch 1AA.

The biggest single holdup for a playoff is the mid-majors, IMO. You can't acknowledge that they aren't at the same level as the BCS conferences if you want to have a champion "decided on the field".

Unfortunately even college sports have become all about money. I didn't watch one bowl game in its entirety this year. Maybe it's because there are so many bowl games now that they don't seem to be important anymore. At least in a playoff system EVERY game would be important.

Isn't the ONLY game that's important the last game of a playoff?

Re: Should Non-BCS schools form their own league with a playoff?

Considering the BCS schools have their own system it would only be fair. A non BCS school could create the hardest possible non conference schedule, go undefeated, and it would still be a stretch for them to get in the National Championship...

No, because if your team doesn't win it's 1st playoff game it's done. That makes all the games equally important.

If the end goal is a championship, though, isn't the championship game the most important game?

    Most important? Yes.

But you said it would be the only important game, and that's not true, at least IMO.

I think the OP's idea sounds like a good one in principal, but I think it would it be the football equivalent of the NIT. Remember who won that last year?

    Yeah, me neither.

Re: Should Non-BCS schools form their own league with a playoff?

If I were the non bcs schools I would also make a pact not to schedule any non conference games with any BCS schools... If the BCS schools want to exclude them from a Championship possibility then just exclude them all together...
