    Defense

We need a DC that can contain the high powered spread offenses in the B12. That means recruiting speed over size for LBs and Corners. I see the DC hire as crucial.

Defense was also the portion of the game that we struggled the most at - imo.

    Re: Defense

that was the gene chizik plan... get better players. we just need a solid scheme. our D doesnt have to be great. it just has to hold teams to about 25-30 a game and will be right there in it for every game

Anyone watch Ole Miss? Their defense is the model for stopping the spread... just fast and solid on every defensive unit

    Re: Defense

For ISU to be successful on defense, we need coaches who can flat out recruit in Texas and Florida. I think I'd rather have a young up-and-comer as DC than someone like Dunn or Coyer. We need someone who can relate to the young athletes.

Boy, that's a great point. But, there's value in knowledge and experience, too. I kinda wonder if it's not a bad idea two have a couple of guys who are seasoned sprinkled into the staff mix.

Like Bliel (49) on offense and Dunn on defense (maybe late 50s?). And, think about Dunn's 10 years of experience with the Auburn defense.

Plus, maybe some of the older father-figure types can connect with certain young personality types, too?

    Just mulling it over. . . .

The next DC will probably be announced at our next bball game - it is the way of JP.

    Re: Defense

Someone tell me the last time a DC strapped on a helmet and actually made a tackle. What ISU needs is players. Corners that can cover, and LB's with some speed. Safeties that can light up a guy over the middle, and cover the deep ball. But most of all, the thing we need first and foremost is a pass rush. We haven't had a decent pass rush for 4 years. If Coach Rhoads and company can recruit some speed off the corner, in this pass happy league were in all of a sudden, we should be successful. The scheme is secondary if we dont have the players to run it on the field. Id love a DC who is a crazy s.o.b. on the sideline, wake some people up like Mike Singletary does in San Fran.
