    Bowl Game Attendance?

Has anyone seen what the bowl game attendance has been this year? Just wondering if the economy has had a measurable impact.

    Re: Bowl Game Attendance?

From the looks of box scores and stories I have heard, it has been impacted. The Ruters-NC State game, they moved everyone to one side of the stadium, so to make it appear sold out. There were under 60k at the Orange, but announced attendance was 73k. The Outback had 55k. Iowa brought around 20k, and there were more Hawks fans than SC fans. But still, the upper reaches in the corners were empty. Sugar Bowl announced at 71, and it looked like a good crowd. 59k at the Cap One, that places seats around 70. Northwestern brought more fans than Mizzou to Alamo. Insight set a record for attendance.

    Re: Bowl Game Attendance?

I mentioned something about this to a friend the other night. The figures will be interesting to see considering a lot of the bowls and upper decks that were only half full or less.

I thought Northwestern didn't travel well and that's why they got put in a bowl lower than they deserved.

I think Mizzou lost some of their Luster at the end of the Season. Lost to KU in KC, Lost the Big 12 Championship.

Overall I have seen a lot of empty seats, but maybe that is just my impression.

    Re: Bowl Game Attendance?

Bowl games never really come close to selling out though do they? I know I have been to a bunch of Gator Bowls and a couple of Orange Bowls and they were always 2/3rds full at best...

    $$$$

Might be better if the local establishments did'nt soak people so bad with high room and meal rates.

    Re: Bowl Game Attendance?

I read in the CR Gazette, pre-bowl-selections, that the perception that Northwestern 'didn't travel well' was incorrect. What was said was that while NW fails to sell out at home they have regularly sold out their 'allotment' for their bowl games ... amazingly with numbers similar to the Hawkeyes. I think that the 'Bowls' worry about the same teams attending their game year after year so they change it up ... Except of course, the Rose, Cotton, Sugar and Orange Bowls ... which we all know are the only Bowl Games worth worrying about ... Oh yeah, and the Snack chip Bowl in AZ.
Here's to wishing everyone a health and happy New Year ... Except the 'Carpet Bagger' who I hope is sucessfull in '09 as he was in '08.

That was a great crowd. So disappointed that they are moving that bowl to Jerry Jones' new stadium next year. Too many bowls are being played in the NFL stadiums - it takes away from the college atmosphere. The Orange Bowl doesn't seem the same since they moved it. Same with the Fiesta Bowl.

    Re: Bowl Game Attendance?

The Fiesta Bowl was announced as a sellout. I think that means it's really a sellout (i.e. all tickets sold), not an "Iowa" sellout.

Gene Smith, 1993-2000. 7 years, 6 NCAA's, 1 bowl game. Revenue sports postseason participation 50%. Good.
    Bruce Vandevelde, 2000-20005. 5 years, 4 bowl games, 2 NCAA's, 2 NIT's. Postseason participation 80%. Better.
    Jamie Pollard, 2005-. 4 years. 1 bowl game, 0 NCAA's, 0 NIT's. Postseason participation: 13%. The next big step.

When I saw the thread title I thought maybe this was an early roll-call for next year! Because if we go bowling, I'll be there!
