Defense wins big games and championships

Given how the Big 12 isn't exactly known for defense, All along, i've been worried about how the Big 12 would perform in bowl games. In Texas Tech's and Oklahoma State's bowl losses, both gave up over 500 yards of total offense as well as 40 plus points.

Going into bowl season, Texas was #1 in the Big 12 in total defense, but nationally ranks 49th in total defense...ouch. Oklahoma is second in the Big 12 in total defense, but nationally ranks 63.

Meanwhile 5 Big 12 teams rank in the top 10 nationally in total offense with a 6th just outside of the top 10 in Nebraska.

When is the pendelum (sp?) going to change back to defense? Of all the bowl games to date, Nebraska has looked the most impressive on defense.

Oh, I was able to watch the last quarter and a half of the Cotton Bowl, and I couldn't believe how sloooooooooooooow Texas Tech looked and that was against an average Ole Miss team.

TT is a very good team. If someone has 6-8 weeks to get ready for them, it really helps. The problem with TT is everything is on the QB. If he is having an off day or you can get pressure on him, then they are beatable. I was really disappointed in the TT defense. They have always been bad, but I thought they were showing some improvement this year.

Next year with a bunch of new QB's in the big 12 we'll probably be talking about a resurgence of defense, but most likely it will be the offenses just aren't as prolific. Honestly this is probably one of the best offensive leagues ever this year.

I think you're right on. You need good defenses to go with the offense.

Re: Defense wins big games and championships

    I agree completely.

You have to bring a defense. That is why I think OU might get destroyed by Florida. I hope Texas can whoop OSU, but they will have to play excellent defense to do so.

An inferior Northwestern team hung with Missouri because Missouri could not stop them whatsoever and Northwestern at least had an average defense. Oregon ran wild all over Okie St's defense... just manhandled them upfront. Same with Ole Miss... their defense just destroyed TT. Graham Harrell had no time and nobody open to throw to. They were totally one dimensional... and they gave up HUGE chunks of rushing yards to Ole Miss.

I think, and hope, that Texas has just enough defense to beat OSU, but I'm predicting that OU gets whipped by Florida.

Iowa might not be flashy, but they are in nearly every game they play because of great defense and the ability to run the ball effectively on offense. I still think that is the secret to good football.... always has been and always will be. Stop the run on defense and run the ball effectively on offense. I think that beats a team like TT everytime IMO.

Re: Defense wins big games and championships

    2008-2009 bowl records thru today:

    Pac-10 5-0
    SEC 5-2
    Big East 4-2
    Big 12 3-2
    C-USA 3-2
    Mountain West 3-2
    Sun Belt 1-1
    ACC 4-6
    WAC 1-4
    Big Ten 1-5
    MAC 0-4

If the Big 10 is known for great defense, I'll take the Pac 10, SEC, or Big 12 style over it any day.

    Bruce Vandevelde, 2000-20005. 5 years, 4 bowl games, 2 NCAA's, 2 NIT's. Postseason participation 80%. Better.
    Jamie Pollard, 2005-. 4 years. 1 bowl game, 0 NCAA's, 0 NIT's. Postseason participation: 13%. The next big step.

My ignore list: splitidentity, tarheelhawk, superdorf, clones_jer. That is all.

The Big Ten being down has nothing to do with this conversation.

I agree with the OP, defense is very important IMO. If a team relies too much on prolific offensive numbers and don't play defense, what happens when their offense is slowed down by a solid team?
