    ISU gets glimpse of phenom

I think we'll get more than a glimpse...

    DMR link

Columbus, Ohio - So what's the big deal about this 18-year-old with the looks of a man twice his age that Iowa State's Cory Johnson, Jiri Hubalek and Co., will attempt to defend tonight at third-ranked Ohio State?

Everything, says ESPN television analyst Fran Fraschilla:

"Greg Oden would be the third- or fourth-best center in the NBA - right now."

Everything, says former Ohio State all-American and Olympian Bill Hosket:

"I'm almost afraid to say this, but I think Greg's better than Patrick Ewing at a similar age, and he's much stronger and much bigger than Lew Alcindor was. Greg covers the floor defensively like Bill Russell."

Johnson against Ewing. Hubalek against Alcindor, aka Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Ross Marsden - if he's healthy - against Russell.

Cover your eyes if you're watching on television - unless you want to watch a player Cyclone coach Greg McDermott says could be the best in college basketball.

"He could be No. 1 before it's all over this season," McDermott said. "He's a great talent right now, and (Ohio State) has all the pieces to win a national championship."

The 7-foot Oden, who missed the first seven games while recovering from off-season surgery on his right wrist, averages 14.7 points and 8.3 rebounds during an average of just 24 of 40 minutes in three games.

He has 15 blocked shots, and has only missed twice in 19 field-goal attempts - making 17 in a row at one point.

"We're going to have to have a great night from the perimeter," McDermott said.

Oden, from Indianapolis, Ind., is a two-time national high school player of the year who chose Ohio State over Indiana. The only reason he attends college is because of a new NBA rule that prohibits playing in high school one season, and the pros the next.

"He's an ideal talent," said Hosket, a television broadcaster who lives in Columbus. "He can run and jump, but he's also very modest. I had one NBA scout tell me that Greg would have been the No. 1 (NBA) pick after his junior year in high school.

    "He looks like he's 38, but Greg's a great talent and he's only 18."

In his first game, against Valparaiso, Oden scored 14 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked five shots in 23 minutes. He went 8-for-8 from the field and scored 16 points against Cleveland State in his second game.

In the third college game of his life, Saturday against Cincinnati, the 280-pounder scored 14 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked five shots against Cincinnati.

"He'll be a challenge for our big guys," McDermott said. "He'll be a challenge for some guys in the NBA next year."

And especially for Johnson, a 6-7, 230-pound freshman, tonight.

"We're not going to play him straight-up," Johnson said. "We're going to have to throw some funky stuff at him. He's an animal."

The best "animal" in college basketball?

"When I was in Europe, I played against some big guys, but not with his greatness," said Hubalek, a junior from Prague, Czech Republic.

"I'm looking forward to playing against one of America's best - to see where I stand next to him."

    Name: Greg Oden
    Size: 7 feet, 280 pounds
    Year: True freshman
    Hometown: Indianapolis, IN
    Points per game: 14.7
    Rebounds per game: 8.3
    Blocks per game: 4.33
Key quote: "He's one of the greatest prospects in 30 years," North Carolina coach Roy Williams told the Charlotte Observer.

He's not going to foul us because we're going to avoid him at all costs. Could you honestly see Hubalek trying to post up against him? Even if he did get the ball down low, he'd dribble out and chuck a three.

Cory Johnson is probably our only big (at 5" shorter than Oden) who will not play scared.

I'll tell you where you will stand next to him...about at his eyeball level...

Jiri, you might want to try defending and actually going down low against some of the post players on the worst teams (ie. Savannah State, Lake Superior State, etc) before you call out the beast.

I too read that quote and laughed. This isn't the best time to grow a pair Jiri - they'll get stomped on.

Keep 'em tucked in, take your beating and then grow 'em after this game.

Its possible to get him to foul. Depends how you charge the hoop and the direction. If he tries you block you but doesnt have a chance to really get all ball it could prove worth it. Will he actually make this mistake, who knows. I bet curtis and will could have made it happen =) Maybe wesley can do some funky stuff to him.

I can just see Jiri and Oden in a movie montage...

Jiri: You like THAT old man? You want a piece of ME?
Oden: I don't want a PIECE of you, I want the whole THING!
[Mayhem ensues, Oden makes a meal out of Jiri and friends. Jiri retreats to the 3-point line]
Oden: Now, you've had enough... b*tch.

    Now...name the movie...

He's too smart for that. Being 38, his many, many years of basketball experience have taught him not to do this.

What? What did you say? He is only 18?!?!

Re: ISU gets glimpse of phenom

I swear, we have the cast of Happy Gilmore right here in Iowa...

Jiri - Happy Gilmore - odd form, in la-la land
Jiri's USA family - Grandma Gilmore - putting Jiri in a tough spot
Steve Alford - Shooter McGavin - arrogant without merit, not to mention a dim bulb upstairs
Wayne Morgan - Chubbs - "It's all in the hips...it's all in the hips". Need I say more?
Weird guy that hangs out near the ISU library - Otto (Happy's caddy) - Self explanitory.

It would be just fantastic if Wesley could dunk it on Oden. We could lose by 30 and I'd be happy if that happened.
