    Offense/Defense Scheme?

100 people will ask before we get a straight answer but...

What kind of offense are we running and what kind of defense are we running?

Im pushing for a scheme that has a Triple Reverse Flea Flicker in it.

    We need coordinators first.

I really hope the new coordinators are Tom Herman and David Blackwell. Herman runs an exciting offense and very effective offense with great red zone efficiency, and the defense that Blackwell ran today was agressive and created turnovers.

    Re: Offense/Defense Scheme?

Would it be too much to ask for a 3-4 defense at the college level? I love it in the pros. You don't know where the blitz is coming from, and blocking assignments are harder too. Face it, ISU was wasting a player using 4 up front last year.

What do other players think? I know it requires a real NT to make it work, but man I like the possibilites. I think ISU has to do things differently to win, so why not start with this?

I'm not a real football guy Joe, but I like your idea of doing something different. I agree that you would need a strong NT to help make it happen, but I think you also really need 4 very strong and quick linebackers, and 4 more to back them up.

    Re: Offense/Defense Scheme?

I would say the reason we couldn't do a 3-4 last year was the fact that we were very limited at the linebacker position. We constantly had to blitz a linebacker and then, as we saw, the middle of the field was left wide open. So if we were in a 3-4, then that would take away one run support position and we would still have the same amount of linebackers dropping back. I myself like the 3-3-5, I think then you can blitz corners and bring more speed while not always losing a position in the front.

    Re: Offense/Defense Scheme?

It would take some time to develop and recruit the personnel to fit a 3-4. It's pretty hard at the college level because the DL is all about stopping the run. Do we have 3 defensive linemen who have the size to both stuff the run and collapse some pockets? Do we have enough linebackers? None of them showed the ability to get to the QB while blitzing in 2008. That would be key in a 3-4. Then again -- our defense can't be worse than it was in 2008.

Offensively, whatever we do, I hope we finally realize that a tight end can be the quarterback's best friend.

We started to realize that in the second half of the season.

    Re: Offense/Defense Scheme?

Whatever we do, I would like to see something slightly different, especially on offense, than what everyone else is running. It makes us harder to prepare for, and that can help to offset a talent differential that will always be there to a degree. I'm not proposing a reversion to the triple option of the Walden days, but something that at least keeps opposing defenses off balance.

If we can get a nose that weighs 320 lbs that can move laterally like Urlacher and do back flips we could.

I seem to remember somewhere where CPR and 4-2-5 were connected, but not coming to me right now.
