Chizik on "Two Guys Named Jim"

The radio show "Two Guys named Jim" starring Jim Walden and Jim Zable had Gene Chizik as a guest last night. Gene was impressive with his candid, crisp, no spin answers. He thinks it is more important to get the right coaches in place than to get someone in place quickly. He wants assistance that are committed to him and ISU and are not looking for better job right away.

I especially was impressed with his answer to the recruiting question, he wants to recruit Iowa first and second to recruit the close "drive to" areas like Omaha, Kansas City and Chicago. We haven't gotten our share of the football talent from the neighboring states and I would love to see more of these kids on our campus.

That's interesting. I've always thought that we didn't hit the Kansas City area hard enough, but I was told from a former member of Mac's staff that the coaches down there push the university of Missouri so much that it is tough to make much of a dent.

And if they were extremly talented, then you are dealing with Notre Dame, OU etc for their services.

    It will be interesting.

I hope we do not lose a lot of time making in roads into Chicago and KC. That might be a three year process. As far as in state goes, go for it. Personally, I think he should recruit Des Moines, Bradeton, Austin, and Omaha before KC and Chicago. If KC, why not St Lou and St joe also?

Just take a look at recruiting places for all Big 12 teams and see where the prime rib comes from. I see some possibilities of raiding Colorado and Wyoming.

Re: Chizik on "Two Guys Named Jim"

Is KC a hotbed for football talent? How many times does a KC school show up on the USA Today High School Super 25. More DI kids come from St. Louis. Not to say there aren't some really good KC players...Tony Temple (Mizzou) came from Rockhurst and wasn't recruited a lot because he's wasn't big. KU and Mizzou dominate KC Metro, but the KC blue chips go elsewhere.

As far as other out-of-state "drive to" areas, I hope ISU agressively recruits 1.) the Chicago area, 2.) the Twin Cities, and 3.) the State of Nebraska, particularly Omaha. Tom Osborne (TO) made it was an honor for in-state kids to walk-on and earn their scholarship. Every kid in Nebraska grew up a Husker fan. Callahan isn't the catalyst TO was and NE kids aren't automatically thinking NU first.

Re: Chizik on "Two Guys Named Jim"

If he's recruiting Missouri kids he needs to check out some NE Missouri kids. The 2A State title came from one of two schools 7 times in the 90's. My old high school down there has a defense that only gave up touchdowns in 2 games this year and the offense was averaging close to 40 points a game. Granted it's only 2A football but didn't Brett Meyer come from a 2A school?

How's about recruiting a kicker from Ankeny? Just one of them. Probably any one of them would do. That place is a factory for kickers and you would think that the old regime would figured out a way to get a kid to go 20 miles north of his hometown to go to school.

Atlantic is 3A, or, at least was when they thrashed my town in district play.

Re: Chizik on "Two Guys Named Jim"

The Two Clowns Named Jim show is still on? How can anybody stand listening to the homer squak voice and the voice that drove our program into the ground. Too bad Haluska's first name was not Jim. He would fit in fine.

On another note, glad to see Chisick can take the morons long enough to provide interesting radio. Keep the Cyclone radio going.

There are some decent players coming out of the KC area. Usually 2-3 good D-1 prospects every year. Most come from Rocherst, Blue springs, Ray-Pac and Olathe.

    kickers aren't that important, huh?

2004 - missed fg sent us into ot vs. missouri. we lost in ot.
2005 - missed fg sent us into ot vs. kansas. we lost in ot.

personally, maybe we SHOULD be looking harder at kickers. kickers are a lot more important than you think. as a cyclone fan, you should know that by now. what's the saying? those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it? anyone want to lose more games due to a poor kicking game? anyone think EIU gave kaeding a scholarship?

Re: Chizik on "Two Guys Named Jim"

tube 1, i really disagree with you on this one. walden didnt drive the isu program in the ground that is simply not true. you can thank criner who almost gave isu football the death penalty. Walden took over the program with a loss of scholarships. when he was fired mac inherited a recruit who put back to back 2000 yard rushing seasons, he also beat every team in the big 8, and had a winning percentage better than macs. zobel was the voice of the hawks for years, but he is an icon in broadcasting and does give other teams credit. im no hawk fan but the guy is a treasure in broadcasting. if you dont like them fine, but it is a great show, they ask terrific questions and get great guests. maybe listen to the show before trashing it.

Zabo is amusing, but I can't stand Walden.

They're both closet ISU haters, but they'll never admit it.

I listen to the show but would like it better if Walden wasn't there.
