    Text Messaging: Friend or Foe?

As text messaging becomes more and more popular - the downward spiral of written communication continues - so it seems.

Personally, I attribute the e-mails I get from my sister with "b4", "any1", etc - not to mention complete lack of capitalization and such - to text messaging.

I'm far from perfect in the spelling and grammar arena. I probably couldn't get by without the various spell checkers - especially the latest addition to Firefox that spell checks text as I type it. Yet I don't look for any possible way to shortcut the written word.

I can see it for text messaging where it's not easy to type. Yet how much longer does it take to type "before" on a keyboard instead of "b4"? This isn't bingo, people...

The recent massacre of the english language started before text messaging became popular though I agree text messaging is certainly adding to the problem. A combination of computers, e-mail and poor typing skills really started it all.

I really hate crap like b4, any1, etc. You are only saving 2 or 3 keystrokes in most cases. I don't do a lot of text messaging so I'm not very fast but I still take the time to write sentences and use punctuation.

Text messaging didn't start it. It just proliferates it.

Really it's a product of the internet in general. Email, message boards, online games, etc. It's just another form of slang that developed when the primary medium for communication became our fingers instead of our mouths.

I will text occasionally, but I insist on writing out sentences, using punctuation, and capitalization. I'm a nerd.
