Thoughts and observations on ISU basketball

    1. Great win last night. The one thing we need to get is consistency. We'll probably beat some pretty good teams, and probably lose to some that aren't good.
    2. The Ham is starting to adjust to the speed of play in Division 1. He continues to improve rapidly
    3. Buckley is a good penetrator, and is great at distribution. He is also a pretty good defender. I think once he masters the offense, he'll start to take lots of Petey's minutes
    4. Wes is much, much better than what he's been playing lately. Hopefully he starts playing like he can.
    5. Colvin is better than expected, as is Gilstrap
    6. Next year, L.A. Pomlee will provide that big, bruising, strong, athletic presence at the 4 next year. L.A. has improved greatly in the weight room, and he's super athletic, and a good defensive player. I think he will be provide the physica, athletic 4 that we need. What he gives up on the offensive end, he'll more than make up for on the defensive end.
    7. Recruiting continues to go well
    8. CB played great last night! Hopefully he can keep it up for the rest of the year.

Even though I haven't seen them play, I'm hearing the same thing about Gilstrap and Colvin - they're even better than advertised.

As for Pomlee, he sure does have a lot of potential. Can't wait to see what he can add to our team next year, even though he'll still be raw.

Petey might give up some of his minutes, but he will still average at least 28 minutes the rest of the season. He is our smartest player on the floor.

I think this is what's been driving me nuts about basketball and football. Every now and then you see signs of some goods things that could happen. And then every now and then you see some signs that make you wonder if we have any idea what we are doing.

Still love the we got a road win as those are not an easy thing to get at all times.

I agree with snowcraig2.0; Petey is way undervalued by the average poster on C.F. We are lucky to have him.

Re: Thoughts and observations on ISU basketball

One thing I haven't understood is if Boozer hasn't played because of his defense, then why are Wes, Petey, and Lucca playing?

I do think that Petey has been a big asset this year offensively though, probably the most steady offensive player we have, especially since he doesn't have to handle the ball...

Probably because Wes, Petey, and Lucca have all shown that they either are or can be assets on the offensive end of the court. Boozer really hasn't shown much of an ability to operate within a team concept on offense in the past. If he's just going to chuck up 3's without any discretion as well as play no D, he'll never see the floor.

To Boozer's credit though, we saw a completely different player on the floor last night. He's way more athletic than any of the 3 mentioned above, so if he shows he's going to bring it on a consistent basis on D, he's going to see more minutes which would be a very good thing for this team. We need a perimeter defender who can hassle slashing-type players. Lucca can be that guy sometimes, but I still think some of the quicker guys in the Big XII are going to give him problems. Boozer's got the body and athleticism to be a defensive PITA for other teams, he just needs to show that he's willing to do the dirty work.

I am sick of smart players. I want good players. Even better would be a good smart player. Tinsley was not that smart. He was freakin good though.

Also I want someone on our team to start a fight with the other team. Possibly Colorado when we play them. Just to show that there is some fight in the dog. Jared Homan where art thou.

Correction on point #1. We will not beat any good teams, but we will lose to some bad ones. We might play "alright" against good teams, but will not beat them.

Re: Thoughts and observations on ISU basketball

The consistency thing is frustrating and yes I know we are young but there are a lot of good young teams out there that win games and don't struggle with consistency. Bottom line is good players win games. Craig showed us what he is capable of last night. Now he needs to not follow that up with a 4 for 12 shooting night Weds. like he has so many times after having a big game. I said it last year, that Baylor game where he knocked down all those 3's was a bad thing because after that he was looking for the 3 too much. He's cut back this year thankfully but he's at his best closer to the basket as we saw last night.

Just like in football, I hate the youth and inexperience excuses and at some point those excuses become unacceptable once a player has gained experience. DG and Craig both logged a lot of minutes last year, the time has run out on that excuse for them IMO. We should expect those 2 to be our goto guys every night and for them to perform at a high level. Yes they are going to have some off nights once in awhile but they can't have 1 good game every 3 or 4 games, it needs to be a nearly every night thing if this team is going to compete.

However, pne thing we must watch out for is Craig will not socre 36 points every game (he was like three 12 point players rolled into one for his stats.) We ned to get three players a game indouble figures to truly spread it out. Ham may be the key to the rest of the season.

I agree; it was fun to watch him post up in the paint last night. We now have another player who likes it inside.

I don't expect 36 but for him to put up something around 18 and 8 isn't too much to ask I think. If you look through his game log this year there are already a lot of this 4 for 12 kind of shooting nights for him, a lot of them came after big games too.

ESPN - Craig Brackins Game Log - Iowa State Cyclones

Just prior to this game he followed up a 28pt 17 board game with a 18 point 5 board and 5 for 12 stinker from the field. His 8 for 12 FT shooting was the only thing saving his scoring line. I'll give CB some credit, he's been more consistent than last season but he's still got some work to do on this. Seems like the games where he struggles are the ones he doesn't play as agressive as he has recently. I like seeing him take it to the basket strong even if it means we have to see him shoot failthrows because at least he's putting himself in position to score vs being pushed away from the basket and settling for jumpers and long fade aways.

DG has been all over the place too this season: ESPN - Diante Garrett Game Log - Iowa State Cyclones about every 3rd game he gives us a solid all-around performance it looks like then he follows it up with a stinker and maybe a mediocre game in between them.
