    Computer Advice

So my back up computer crapped out yesterday after my main computer did the same thing about a month ago. My wife and I are looking into a new computer. Something between$500 and $1,000. We really only use it for e-mail, surfing the net, uploading pictures, we did just get a new video camera so we will be uploading videos and maybe some editing.

Anyone with some advice on which computers to look at?

    Re: Computer Advice

The options are pretty numerous in that price range and for those pretty basic tasks. If you want portability, the sweat spot in notebooks right now is in the $700-900 range and you can get pretty good equipment. For desktops, you wouldn't need anything other than a $400-700 package.

One thing you might want to do is check out Best Buy on Sunday when they have their new ad out and see what packages they have for desktops with an LCD monitor. They've been doing some pretty good packages lately with Dell Studio or Inspiron desktops with either 20" or 24" LCD monitors in the $600-$800 range, some going a bit higher.

Anyways, if you go to Best Buy, just say "NO" to everything GeekSquad tries to sell you

Dell desktops are crap, but their laptops are quite nice.

I would echo this statement. I also have had a Toshiba laptop that I really liked. Currently have an HP. Acer is another up and coming brand...

Also keep in mind that we're all going to have differing opinion as I'm sure someone here has an HP horror story and someone else has a Toshiba horror story...

Do to the GeekSquad I am very tempted to not buy from Best Buy. I do not like them. But there prices seem to be the best in town.

    Re: Computer Advice

I must be the only person on earth who has good encounters with Geek Squad. I mean, I know my computer stuff, generally tell them what's wrong, and my agent quickly confirms my suspicion and tells me what needs to be done. I've never had an issue with it. Obviously you don't want to have to deal with them because that means something is wrong, but they've always taken good care of me.

    Re: Computer Advice

If you're computer shopping, then Dealnews is going to be your best friend:

dealnews.com: Find the best deals on computers, laptops, HDTV, iPods, and MP3 players

Scroll down until you see the 'PC Laptops' section (right near the top of the page). Click on the banner to see the expanded section, with search modifiers on the lefthand side.

PC Laptop deals - Compare prices on PC Laptop from dozens of stores

This is a fantastic site; I used it to bargain-hunt every single piece of the computer I custom-built (that I'm typing on right now).

    Re: Computer Advice

I am curious where this impression that dell desktops are crap is coming from. IMHO they are the best bang for your buck systems you can buy.

If you're going the notebook route, the best place anywhere on the net for reviews, user feedback, huge discounts, etc would be notebookreview.com - it's the CF of the laptop world

    Re: Computer Advice

Generally speaking, Asus makes the best notebooks for dependability, price/feature ratio and screen quality. Sonys are very over-priced for the quality of components used and their drivers are rarely updated. HP's laptops (dv4t and dv5t series, along with HDX16 model) are very dependable and the selection is pretty good. Dell's current XPS lineup is fairly outdated and will be upated in early January and their Inspiron lineup is made up of economical but not as durable machines.

Personally, I have a custom built Compal JFL92 (Sager 2092) that I put together this past summer.

Unfortunately not yet. Once I get Dell to start accepting them, we'll have much more pull in the industry
