Why things wont get any better.

To some this up this up in two areas: Rebounding and attacking the rim. Here are the numbers.

We are 5-0 when we have EITHER outrebounded or shot more free throws than the opponent.

We are 2-4 when we have failed to do both, with a squeaker win at home over UC Davis and a win against Loyal where we shot it well.

In our 4 lossses we have been outrebounded 119 - 149.
We have been beaten on the freethrow line 35-50 to 67-92

This all stems from the philosophy of shooting all jump shots and then sending 1 guy to the offensive glass, and it seems like it is optional for him. We will get knocked around in conference play. Yes there will be an occassional game where we shoot it well and give ourself a chance to win, but the rest of the games we will get beat up badly(similar to the Iowa game).

I totally agree. LE preached rebounding and getting to the free through lines, even in LE's best team, theer were scoring drought once in a while, and they made up or it by attacking the lane and going to the free through line

This is a product of not having a strong front court. There is Brackins, and that is it. He shouldn't even be playing the 5, he should be at the 4. There is no depth and only one guy, hence little rebounding.

I'm going to puke if I read another post about offensive boards. These guys aren't supposed to get offensive boards. They go right into defense. Considering you are such an expert you don't notice the obvious.

These guys are either young or not athletic enough.

If Mac had them crash the offensive boards you'd be ******** that we give up too many easy transition points.

Will having Gilstrap, Pomlee, Hamilton, JVB and CB next season help this area of the game? I know little about basketball, so I'm seriously asking.

Except Pomlee Hamilton JVB are NOT Big 12 quality players. No way would you see a Texas, Kansas, OU playing with players of that caliber. We have 3 guys on the entire team with Big 12 talent... Lucca, CB, DG.

Gilstrap certainly will help. When you have a really athletic guy like that you can let at least him crash the boards.

Most coaches have there 2 lead guard get back for transition D. Not 4 and sometimes all 5 guys get back as soon as we pass the ball around the perimeter and then cast up a 3. Also how many years is it going to take for him to get players that are good enough so we can rebound and play transition defense.

I am sorry but that is a little amusing that the concept of going to the glass and getting back on defense can not be accomplished both by the same team.

I see you talk nothing of this team actually attacking the basket.

How do you know this? And, you discount the abilities of young players to develop?

If they are not top tier Big 12 players, is it possible nevertheless they can help the ISU climb from where it is today, setting the stage for even better players to be recruited?

I would bet we have a couple of guys stay on the offensive end to rebound next year. I'd also bet had Wes stayed Wes and maybe Luca would have been told to crash the boards. Mac has decided to give up zero transition points and he is willing to give up some offensive boards to make that happen. He sees that as a good trade. Personally I'd let Petey and Luca or CB stay to rebound. But I'm not a coach.

Re: Why things wont get any better.

I guess my point is that if we concede to SDSU then how will it get better when we are playing a more athletic team.

I am in total agreeance that Mac wants his guys to get back. I just think that is not getting us anywhere.

Re: Why things wont get any better.

Most of the problems with this team can be solved by making a few shots and taking care of the ball! Yes, they don't rebound well, that is because they are working so hard not to give up transition baskets. They are also a little lean on bulk.

Last night was a no one tuned in game. That is all on GMAC. If the guys on the floor are not with it, put in someone else! It is going to be a long season unless a couple more guys step forward and decide to play basketball.

We couldn't even put full court pressure on SDSU coming out of a timeout without giving up an easy layup. Mac should have stuck to his usual system and had the guys back on a set defense with a little ball pressure or just fouled right away.

If we play a more athletic team we would certainly give up transition points. But since we fall right into defense we won't. If we had a better team Mac would only use this plan against the more athletic teams... hopefully next year.
