    Why Play In DM?

Just exactly why are we playing these games in DM. Is it because schools like Ohio State and Bradley won't play us home-and-home.
Seems like it is costing us money vs. playing these games in Ames. Should be clearing $200K or so from a home game and I don't think we are getting that type of payoff now.
I think we would have won against Ohio State last year had we played in Hilton - maybe Bradley too. One more win last year could have put us in the NIT.

If it gets quality teams on the schedule, I am all for it. The timing is killing me though! Same day as my company Christmas party two years in a row!

    Re: Why Play In DM?

From what another poster stated, we play Bradley away next year and then at Hilton the year after - so that's not it.

I think it's for exposure and money. Well, that's almost gotta be it. I don't see a problem with it - except we can't seem to get the numbers to show up at WF. Maybe the game needs to be part of season ticket games for some/all donors.

    Re: Why Play In DM?

    Quoting myself from another thread:
A major focus of the athletic department is to try and expand the DM fanbase. Ames is simply not a large enough "home team" area. DM is close enough that the Cyclones should be the "home team" there. This combined with it's size makes it vital to the future of the program that we expand the fanbase there.

    Re: Why Play In DM?

I feel games played in Des Moines are hurting the team more than they are helping. I understand we want to increase our exposure but I am pretty sure the only fans in attendence were already Iowa State fans.

However, I do not think playing in Wells Fargo Arena last season is the reason why we did no make it to the NIT. I think that had to do with coaching.

    Re: Why Play In DM?

Playing in Des Moines with the reasoning that it'll add to ISU's exposure is pure crap. Even the announcers were commenting that the atmosphere in Hilton is already great, and considering we fill it a lot more than than Wells Fargo, there's no reason to play in a foreign arena that's supposed to be our home turf. Play the game in Cedar Rapids if you want to make it a neutral site, and if you want more Bradley fans to make the drive.

    Re: Why Play In DM?

It is definately all about building the fan base in Des Moines. Des Moines and it's surrounding suburbs have a population that is quick approaching half a million. It is also 35 minutes down the interstate from Ames. If we are going to grow our revenue to build the facilities we want and to put 60k in Jack Trice every Saturday, this is where they are going to come from.

There are a lot of alumni living and working in the Des Moines area, and there is a lot of money there as well. Looking at the NCC membership in Polk county, there is plenty of room to grow here. JP knows this and he is just trying to reach out to this market. When you go to Cedar Rapids, you would have a hard time telling that this state has 2 major college teams, at this point that is not the case in Des Moines. Making the Cyclones the hometown team for the area, much like the Hawks in Cedar Rapids, would be a huge help to the program.

    Re: Why Play In DM?

National exposure on ESPN 2 doesn't hurt either. I would think that the TV money would make up for the lower attendance numbers. And I do agree that maybe including the game in season ticket packages would be a huge help as well.

Why do you think it doesn't help our exposure in Des Moines? It definitely can't hurt can it? I'd be in favor of having a conference game down there if it helps us gain more fans. It was never meant to be a neutral site game so I'm not sure what the 2nd part of your post is about. The announcers were being stupid with that stuff about "neutral site." It is a home game on the schedule that happens to be played in Des Moines. I know the atmosphere sucks compared to Hilton but in the overall scheme of things I think it's a good event.

    Re: Why Play In DM?

uhh why not? i think it is a smart move, not only does it get more attention, but it makes the state of iowa look good, what do i mean by that? gives us a better chance of possibly hosting some type of tourn. down the line, and it would be considered a "neutral court"

Iowa State: Anyone who's a true college basketball fan needs to see a game at Hilton Coliseum. Nice is in the DNA of Iowans and the fans here are particularly gracious -- even when the home team loses but gives a great effort, they are appreciative.

ESPN.com picked Hilton Coliseum as the "Hot Arena" in the Big 12...coaches in the league noted that, "regardless of talent, the Cyclones have a home court like no other."

    Re: Why Play In DM?

wow, there were a lot of empty seats in the WFA from my view watching it on ESPN2.... and the atmosphere was Carver-Hawkeye like most the game. I realize there wasn't a lot to cheer for, but a Hilton crowd kinda urges things sometimes in big games when players aren't performing, but I swore I heard a pin drop at one point in the game.

I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.

    Re: Why Play In DM?

exposure and money, from the sponsorship of mediacom and prolly from Des Moines in order to get us to play down here!!!! Plus it appeals to the main fan base of Des Moines and gives them a little treat! Quite a few teams do this kind of thing where they will play teams on a neutral floor for those very reasons, that area wants exposure.

    Re: Why Play In DM?

I'm surprised Iowa hasn't played any games there yet. It would seem to benefit them more than us, especially since their campus is 2.5 hours from WFA and there are plenty of Hawk fans living in the metro. It really would be a treat for their fans. Most of our fans would gladly make the 30 min drive to Hilton I think. I like to see us playing there, sort of adds spice to the season. Plus the national exposure and playing good teams is fun. It's a nice arena, it would be shameful not to use it once in awhile since its in the backyard.
