    Allen Bell Winter Driving Tips

Allen is struggling to learn about how to drive in sub-zero arctic Iowa winter weather, being from Florida and all, so those of us who grew up in the great white north are going to have to give him some tips:

    1. You need to turn the defroster on. Full bore. First thing inside the car.
    2. When it's below freezing, you can let the car idle and warm up for 2-5 minutes and it will de-ice the windows making ice scraping much easier......Allen is saying "Oh hell no, it's too cold to sit in the car for 5 minutes"....welcome to Iowa, Mr. Bell
    3. Get your windshield wiper fluid filled up with 100% windshield fluid with de-icer mix. Also makes life easier.
    4. Get used to driving looking out that small spot over the heating vent on those days you say "Oh hell no, it's too cold to sit in the car for 5 minutes". That's normal winter driving in the frozen tundra.
    5. Never, ever slam on the brakes on icy roads, but slowly pump the brakes...ask a native to show you how. And give lots of room between you and the car in front of you on ice, or you'll end up in their trunk. More room than a major Florida thunderstorm with street flooding.

And, uh, yeah you probably should be driving instead of messing around with a camera...and you probably shouldn't have said on the video that your seatbelt doesn't work...you're going to need to get that fixed now. Can someone recommend a good inexpensive mechanic?

Oh yeah, I forgot that an Ice Scraper is your best friend in the winter. Next to a good pair of gloves or mittens while scraping.

Have you discovered long johns yet? Another great winter lumberjack invention you should get the 411 on.

This is one of my biggest pet peeves when I tell people how to stop the fogging of your windows on in the interior. Turn the thermostat to full heat and turn the freakin AC on with it. It dehumidifies the air while warming your car up. I've debated with people for hours on end about this and I can't believe everyone doesn't do this trick.

    +1111

I guarantee that ANYONE from the South has no idea what you are talking about...thanks for adding that.

When I moved to Houston, the first time we got freezing rain, I learned to stay off the roads. More dangerous than a car crash derby and bumper car ride out on the streets. They think they can drive faster on ice than regular streets and slam on the brakes to stop. Fun to watch from a safe distance.

On the flip, a regular rain storm down here is something out of the apocalypse for someone from the midwest. Comes down in sheets that the windshield wipers can't even keep up with. Can become a "water out" like a "white out" with cars pulling onto the shoulder of the freeway when really bad.

Once you've been here awhile, you drive just as fast when it's raining like that as the locals. I think that's where they get the idea you can do the same on ice.

I thought most cars these days had ABS - and you aren't supposed to pump those breaks. Just push down and let the brakes do the work.

Re: Allen Bell Winter Driving Tips

I feel his pain. Moved up here from the South Carolina coast in '99, and these two past winters have got to be the coldest winters I've ever had here so far. Not good when I'm so used to the temperature hanging around 50 for most of the winter, with a few very rare dips below freezing. Only snowed once in '88, and then snowed again the winter I moved to Iowa.

    Great soundtrack.

Allen is stuck in Iowa over winter break, not sure why, so he's trying to keep away from getting bored.

It is funny how people react to stuff that you just grew up with and deal with pretty much on a daily basis this time of year. Probably similar to the reaction I had the first time I saw a cockroach from Louisiana.
