    Can we win in 2009?

What is everyone's thoughts on having a decent year next year? We obviously have players that have experience now, and will be Sophmore's and Junior's. Will the new offense hinder ISU from having a decent season? Or atleast more wins than last year?

    Thoughts?

Well, we host NDSU in the first week and if we don't win - consider this place meltdown city (and talk of deja vu)...

If we don't win some in 2009, look out in 2010 and 2011.

Re: Can we win in 2009?

We can definitely win. The biggest question mark is the defense. If we can find a way to pressure the quarterback with the front four and improve the safeties, this team has the potential to make a big step forward.

This team was a lot closer to success last year then the record indicates. The close loses to Iowa, UNLV, and Kansas along with the sudden departure of one of the more popular players seemed to break the coaches and teams spirit.

There is some real talent on this team. If PR can get the players to buy into his staff quickly then they could have a decent team next season.

Re: Can we win in 2009?

YES! We most definitely can win in 2009. Our offense has the type of athletes to be scary good. I am confident that with an average defense we will win 6 or 7 games and be back in a bowl. The question is can coach Rhoads mold and shape our D to be average?

    MT,

You forgot how we should have won the Colorado game, and that if our D could have made one stop the aTM game...that's 5 VERY winnable games that we just missed on this year.

I see no reason why we couldn't shoot for a 6 or 7 win season next year.

Re: Can we win in 2009?

Potential is there for up to 7-8 wins. However, new coaching staff, new system will mean the learning curve will be there again even for our older players. I would go nuts if we could win 6 games and get a bowl game next year.... I just don't see it happening. I am going to predict 4 wins and call it a much needed improvement from the previous two years. It's a shame that the next two years after that are going to be tough schedules to get some W's out of...

Nevertheless, I am going to be excited with 6 wins any of the next three seasons.

I don't have any doubts that we have the tools on offense to score a lot of points, but they question is can we stop other teams?

I think yes we can, assuming we don't change too much on offense scheme-wise.

Can we win? Yes. Will we? I'll get back to you later on that one.

Re: Can we win in 2009?

The north is going to be a joke next year. I think Nebraska will struggle and Missouri won't be the same without Daniels. Kansas has the best shot at winning the north. Colorado hasn't shown anything worth getting excited about and K-state is a mess.

Our offense is good enough to win almost any game providing it doesn't take the team six games to learn the sets like it did for Chizik. If Rhoads can improve the D, we have a very good shot at a bowl game. We will have to wait for spring game to do find out how this team is adjusting.

I think we can, it shouldn't be a daunting schedule but this year's wasn't either. All the non-conference games should be winnable just like this year's, we should have won all four if we didn't shoot ourselves in the foot.

My biggest concern is too much change on offense that will force the players to take too much time to learn, all of the players are there. I really think it is critical to keep some portion of the existing coaching staff in place (McFarland primarily) probably with the O-Line and his ability to be an intermediary between the new coaches and existing players. Defense needs an overhaul, but Bolt could help with the LBs. Hopefully Rhoads sees these benefits, if so we could win 7-8 games, 6-7 wins were not that far this year. If McFarland and Bolt are not retained somehow we might only win 4 games but get better as the season goes (learning curve-similar to 2007).

I think that 7 wins and bowl eligible is attainable, I do expect us to have more wins then this year, if you look at all the young talent that got experience last year that is returning as long as the loses are not too large with transfers, our schedule is easy south again so I think it can happen, Realistically I think we will have 4-6 wins, 7 is a streatch.
