    What was McCarney's recruiting plan?

I like Dan McCarney, but can anyone tell me what his recruiting plan was for next year? With only 6 recruits for Chizik to work from, where was ISU going to go for players? It's a mystery to me. Any insight would be appreciated.

I wonder if recruits knew this would end up being a down year for ISU and could result in Dan's departure.

Coaching stability plays a major role in the selection process for many kids.

That is weird. We could use 6 OL recruits alone. Not to mention our other issues we have.

yea it seems like he was recruiting a lot of jucos and prolly would have ended up picking up obscure juco guys at the last second or end up with a lot of guys who have been preferred walk-ons in the past with schollies, unless he had a rabbit up his hat!!!

Re: What was McCarney's recruiting plan?

Over the last few years, Mac's staff locked up quite a few commits frrom summer camps who didn't develop as they had hoped they would. To their credit it appears that they were going more to a wait and see mode with players proving themselves more during their sr season. He actually had more prospects taking official visits during the season than I can remember.

The problem was that the less than impressive start to the season followed by the poor conference performances killed the momentum that was needed to land a solid class.

Chizik can sell a fresh start and will likely end up with a stronger class than Mac would have landed. It's actually a plus that he isn't saddled with a bunch of Mac recruits who don't fit the player profile that he has in mind for his system.

I agree wholeheartedly. It may have been easier for Chizik to walk into a situation where there were a bunch of recruits ready to sign, but he'll get a head-start on having his own players in the fold early...

"Stinnetted" - good word. I once heard Judge Robert Bork speak and he mentioned it was odd to have your name used as a verb. But, being "Borked" is something that happens to you, "Stinnetting" is something you do to others. Perhaps they'll both make the dictionary one day.

I assume you are talking about P'Allen Stinnett. Refresh my memory please. What exactly did he do?

Re: What was McCarney's recruiting plan?

Good question!! I think he was planning to lean on the "I'm a helluva nice guy" and the "ISU fans now expect bowl games every year" crutches.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

Re: What was McCarney's recruiting plan?

P'Allen was coming to ISU, then WM got canned, so he decided to stay in prep school for another year. Then GMAC talked to him, so he was interested again, then he wasn't. Then he took a trip to Ames, and coming again, then took a trip to Creighton and was kind of interested in not coming. Then waited for a while letting people wonder (is he, isn't he) then went to Creighton.

On the bright side, with Dan having only 6 recruits, the probability of them "Stinnetting" are relatively low. Chizik must have impressed the current players, because news of transfers (oustside the McKenzie scare) have been zero.

Is being Stinnetted similar to getting Munsoned?

Re: What was McCarney's recruiting plan?

I think Mac might have been trying to raise the level of recruit he was targeting? Although the big time programs get many high level commits fairly early, a lot of them seem to wait and weigh all their options. Higher level recruits also mean more attention needed, and more potential misses for a program like ISU. That's about the only thing I can come up with for getting just 6.

The six is pretty low, but

I don't think you can read that to mean that Mac had only talked to six guys. I remember a lot of years when ISU and Iowa would only have 8 or 10 verbals and then sign 25 guys. I would like to know if Mac and his coaches left any information on their recruiting activities for the new coaches. I do know that Mac talked about helping with the transision, but the last thing I saw was Mac was vacationing in FL.

One thing is for sure, this is going to be an interesting recruiting class.
