Which is more likely to happen in the next 5 years?

Just trying to get a feel for what sport/new coach you guys feel more confident about. Toss up for me, which is why I am asking.

Re: Which is more likely to happen in the next 5 years?

I feel a lot more confident about McD's success, because he already has some top-notch players commited to the program like we've never seen before.

I don't think Chiz will be able to recruit that caliber of player, so he'll have to do a fantastic coaching job to match the success McD has in 5 years.

I mean in 5 years we'll have had four years of Dunson, the Johnsons, Brackins, Diante, Staiger and Booze Cruise. Assuming all of those guys stay for 4 years.

Assuming you are comparing the new coaches between all our sports, I am most comfortable with GMac era, and then others. Chizik could be the greatest story of Iowa State football or he could be just a safe coach for the next few years. By safe I mean 7-5 seasons on an average. I like to think we will be a basketball school first like we have been and in order for that to change we need at least a big 12 championship in football if not NCAA title in the next 5-10 years.

Re: Which is more likely to happen in the next 5 years?

Well, if I had to choose, I would probably throw my money behind basketball. Gmac is the only new coach to have previous head coaching experience, where he built a fine program at a school without much tradition. ISU also has more tradition with the basketball program than with football, and a better home court advantage with Hilton than Trice.

I think the other new hires will be great for us as well, they just have more to overcome. There are a lot of hurdles to overcome to win at ISU in football. In the case of wrestling, the program is already a top 10 program, it is really hard to improve too much. It's also too early to say if Cael will be as good as a coach as he was as a wrestler. He may be the next Dan Gable, and maybe not.

IMO BB will be an easier climb than FB. Both will be better off then than now. But BB will have immediate results.

The Big 12 North has yet to impress me, so I voted for football.

Re: Which is more likely to happen in the next 5 years?

It's much easier to turn a basketball program around than football. In football you need many good players to have a good team, in basketball you only need a few then some good role players to compliment them. ISU has more tradition in basketball than football which makes recruiting a little easier too so I'd say we'll see more b-ball success sooner than we will in FB.

That is a tough one but I chose football because the north is down and will be down I think for another couple of years.

I went w/ basketball- mostly because I see the recruits Gmac has committed already. Give GC another 3-6 months, to confirm some recruits, and I may vote the other way

I feel confident about both but I firmly believe Chizik will do some very special things with Cyclone Football!

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

Re: Which is more likely to happen in the next 5 years?

Problem with poll is one has to do with Conference success while the other has to do with post season success. It would be easier for GMac given that all he has to do is get in the tournament to win just two games for sweet sixteen whereas CG has to win several (5/6) games to win a North title.

Because of this I'd say basketball.

When I told the folks back home I was going to Auchtermuchty, they said "Wear the Fox Hat"
