Outsiders Perspective: Pros/Cons of ISU Job, Rhoads Edition

On my show Friday, I went over my list of what I felt were the pros and cons of the ISU job. I have typed those up now, with some changes now that we know Paul Rhoads is the coach.

Very good write-up and all solid points. It's good hearing a positive perspective on this considering the cyclones aren't even your team......this just better not be some kind of reverse psychology to get everyone's hopes sky high and out of control.

These were things I said, point by point, on Friday. I got tired of the standard stuff, and wrote this stuff down early in the morning (or early for me). I then saw Keeler's column that was in a similar vein. Chasing after shadows gets boring.

Again, these are just my opinions, and I don't have a dog in the fight, but it's how I see it.

Nice write up. When are you going to get Rhoads on your show. I bet he will be more willing to go on your show that Chizik.

Comin' back with a couple q's for ya....

Gettin' any flack from the hawkI faithful on givin' our program some love?

What's your take on Rhoads vs. Ferentz for in-state recruiting? I don't know much about Rhoads Sr., but do you think he will be a factor in developing those local relationships - he'd have to be, wouldn't he?

JDM: Kirk obviously has more going for him right now, in the stability department, and in the latest turn on the rivalry, and with the program's direction. But Rhoads shows a lot of passion...In any given year, what are there, three or four guys that both schools offer? Not sure its a huge deal in the grand scheme of things, and I have always felt that way.

Re: Outsiders Perspective: Pros/Cons of ISU Job, Rhoads Edition

Pros: Solid base of underclassmen to work with. If a splash is made - recruiting will follow - and look out.

Cons: If year 1 is no better than the Chizik era, look out. Recruits will not show up and the program will be in trouble.

Synopsis: The Cyclones need to perform moderately in '09 and need to be in bowl consideration late in the season - may even need to get a bid - to make the Rhoads era what we hope it will be. Much will depend on off-season development and incomeing recruits, especially JUCO's - and I'm normally against that.

I don't think that Gene was unwilling to go on any specific show. He just didn't utilize all the outlets he had, and I am talking about all media, as much as he could have...or some could argue, should have.

I am sure that Rhoads, being from here and understanding the job, will be more open to media opps. And I am sure he will have a pretty busy dance card. I suspect the Cotman already has his number in his Rolodex :)

Revenue sharing is killing ISU. We need that bad. The TV contract is getting better. 11/12 games this year were on TV.

Not sure how important it is to have league tv. ISU was on TV for all but 1 game this season. I really don't know if ISU would make more or less off a Big TV or by keeping it the way it is.

As we all know, his hirings for OC and DC will be big, big, big.

No matter who the coach was going to be, Chizik included, the rebuilding of the defense was going to be something to monitor. That's a pretty steep hill to climb. The good news is that ISU's offense could be one of the most productive in the North next year. Can they keep up the pace with what the defense may give up?

I think each Big 10 school earns around 7 million dollars from the BTN. That would be 16.6% of ISU's entire athletic department budget, according to Jamie's numbers from last Monday. Not a small thing.

Of the 11 televised games, only 6 actually created revenue for ISU. The 4 games on FCS and the UNLV game (MTN) were freebies.

ISU got around $1.3 million in appearance money, plus $2 million from the conference office.
