Worst FB coaches in Iowa State history...

I like everyone to rank their bottom coaches. Here's mine.
    1. Donnie Duncan-Took a winning program into the tank
    2. Gene Chizik-when the going got tough....he left
    3. Jim Criner-from Boise State..slogan," ISU will be finer with Jim Criner"-we weren't
    4. Jim Walden-nice guy, just couldn't win. Had some horrible seasons

I feel bad for Walden to this day. He had a really tough hill to climb.

Your "history" isn't real deep, with 4 of our last 5 coaches on your list

For the record, I think Walden would have been successful if he had the commitment and facilities we have now.

My history only goes back to the mid 70's, but I would put Criner at the top of this list

The thing that irritated me about Walden is that he pretty much quit, too. He basically conceded recruits from the state of Iowa (not to mention football games) to the hawkeyes...

    Criner by far, then Duncan.

Walden wasn't that bad. He gets a bad rap, but I also think he could have done wonders with a guy like JP supporting him.

I'll always remember the big Walden blow up at the end. Very disrespectful to ISU. I supported the guy a long time and can never quite forgive him for that.

Criner, by a long ways. Committed NCAA violations and still couldn't win. Caused us to lose multiple scholarships that put us in a hole Walden couldn't get us out of. Liked to play man-to-man pass coverage against everyone when we had inferior talent. Chuck Long had career days passing against us.

Boy, I hate to see Walden on that list. He got hosed and I don't think it was due only to his coaching. He inherited a program not only in shambles but also under sanctions. The athletic department never once made a move to pump money into the program or facilities. I mean, come on, the turf rolled up during the games at times...that just ain't right. If he would have inherited a program in average shape and had financial support of the AD and fans, who knows. He just wasn't the right guy for what we needed him to do: Win with NOTHING. He also took over during the Golden Age of hawkeye football making media support and casual fan support as well as instate recruiting impossible. Despite all this he did find a few VERY good players. Troy Davis was his recruit. Probably didn't even know what he had but he did find him.

Re: Worst FB coaches in Iowa State history...

Flip Criner and Duncan and I agree. Criner cheated and still lost. Duncan had the talent, but was a terrible game day coach especially mid-season when coaching became even more important due to injuries etc.

Walden was on President Jischke's bad side. Don't forget the Steve Lester issue...led to Max leaving for KSU. And when Max left...Walden quit coaching.
Too bad, but I blame the President for that.

Chizik...wasn't here long enough to be one of the worst coaches, but maybe one of the worst hires (as it turned out.) No I don't blame anyone for that other than Chizik. Glad he's gone.

I thought Pop Warner was OK during his time.

Interesting. Details on the "blow up?"

    Details please from you historians?
    1. What was the Walden blowup
    2. What was the "Lester" issue
    3. What infractions did Criner commit?
    Thanks

Criner paid for room, transportation and other costs to have some players attend DMACC when their grades weren't up to snuff at ISU.

Re: Worst FB coaches in Iowa State history...

Steve Lester had a 200-yard receiving game against Oklahoma in 1989, and then was somehow ruled ineligible by Iowa State. I believe he was eligible by NCAA and Big Eight standards, but some academics at ISU had issues with Walden and/or sports in general.

For Criner, the name Jeff Braswell sums up most of his infractions. Others included driving guys around town, paying for meals out of pocket, etc. Go to THIS LINK and put "Iowa State" in the institution line.

Re: Worst FB coaches in Iowa State history...

Keep in mind that Walden was recruited by other schools after 2 - 3 years at ISU and was labeled the "best offensive mind in college football". But he stayed loyal to ISU and look where that got him. He was able to live off Criner recruits for awhile and ran gimmicky offenses, but in the end, lack of support, scholarhips, and inability to recruit cost him.

Even though Criner had the coaching goods, he cheated. Top of my list.

Duncan never had any depth. Two consecutive seasons he had the team bordering on the top-10, but injusires to the QB (Quinn) and RB (Crutchfield) in consecutive seasons sent the team on a downward spiral they never recovered from. If he could have recruited depth and didn't rely so heavily on the JUCO route, could have been a decent coach.

Chizik laid a foundation for us, but bailed. His decision.

My personal knowledge only goes back to the Major's years, but my list would be:

    1 - Criner
    2 - Duncan
    3 - Chizik

Can't say the others were bad coaches - the ones I listed were victims of their own actions, not necessarily the lack of support or the circumstances they were brought into.

Someday, I think we'll be glad for Chizik having been here. He started to change the culture, brought in a solid foundation of players, and was instrumental in the dramatic increase in the athletic budget.

ISU fans are the greatest in the world. All they ask for is hope and the belief that we have a chance to win every time we step on the field - Johnny Majors (paraphrased)

Ya gotta have the horses, man - Johnny Orr.
