    Will PR recruit IA

Obviously chiz ick wasnt interested in Ia hs players. I was wondering if PR would do an about face and try to bring in more IA kids? My opinion is we cant really be successful without winning more of the instate recruiting battles. I know for a fact chiz ick didnt want James vandenberg and must not of recruited wegher this year. and judging by the # of IA kids listed as commits (3 iowans out of 18) he wasnt going after many this year either.

In my opinion very little of our success will be based on instate recruiting. I feel the same way about basketball. There just aren't the same kind of athletes in Iowa as there is in Ohio, Penn, Florida, Texas, California. Those are the areas that we should focus on. Pulling a player or two out of Iowa each year will be helpful but shouldn't be our main focus.

I'll first drop the requisite "you can't win in Div. I with all Iowa kids"

Now that that is out of the way, I certainly hope that we compete for Iowa kids and Midwest kids in general. Obviously most of the roster will have to be filled out from Texas, Florida and hopefully from some Pennsylvania/Ohio/Southern kids with PR's connections.

Their names escape me now but the hawks had 2 or 3 freshmen in-state players that played a lot this year who I wish we would have gotten. It's a big-time mistake to ignore the in-state players who are good.

You definitely want the good in-state players. From a fans' relation standpoint, it's really easy for the average fan to get behind somebody from Iowa. It feels like a common background. Can't build a program off of just Iowa guys, but they sure can help. Don't ignore them.

    Re: Will PR recruit IA

Sure he will. Really this is a silly question. The real question is how many players will he go after in the state.

I think one of Dan McCareney's down falls was that he took too many players from our great state. We were competing with UNI for recruits when we should be competing with power conference schools.

The only caveat I'd offer is that back in the years when Nebraska was good and winning National Championships, I remember looking at their roster and being surprised at how many Nebraska kids played on that team. If they can field a team like that with a population that is half of Iowas, we sure should be able to do the same....

He said he has already talked to some coaches. Granted we there are not a lot of great DI players in the state, it is nice to get a few. ISU and Iowa have had good players from the state of Iowa. The coach at ISU has to has have a good relationship with the HS coachs in the state for a lot of reasons.

    Re: Will PR recruit IA

I think most everyone realizes Iowa doesn't have enough D1 talent to support even 1 team. That being said ISU can't build a championship program without the support of Iowa kids. In-state kids are the backbone of any great program. You can have good teams without recruiting in-state kids but if you want a "program" it has to start at home. I hope Rhoads makes it a priority to get the top 5-8 kids from the state of Iowa every year(depending on the year). I think DMac's mistake was that if one of those 5-8 went somewhere else he went deeper than 5-8 and this state can't support that. If as many as 50-55 of the 105 on the roster are Iowa kids we can win games. Rhoads' dad is a HOF Iowa HS coach he will have no problem making connections with Iowa coaches.

While I don't want to see us get heavy in Iowa kids I at least want to see up keep the top players in the state from going elsewhere, especially to that school on the eastern side of the state. There is nothing wrong with some of our state's top players but I also don't think we need to sign a bunch of Iowa kids for the heck of it either when we can get a better talent out of state to fill a need.

    Re: Will PR recruit IA

PR has to recruit Iowa and he needs to do it well. Mac built the foundation on Iowa players and turned the corner when he began to win in-state recruiting battles. (That seemed to increase proportionally with Hayden Fry's senility.) You can win with Iowa guys that are supplemented with big state talent at the skill positions. It is important to develop in-state talent as a base of the team. Our 2000 team was evidence of this and the team that shall not be mentioned in the eastern part of the state is proving that again.

Two Iowa kids that come to mind are Tyler Sash and Angerer.

    Re: Will PR recruit IA

My thoughts on in-state recruiting are best summed up in a comment John Madden has made in the past. A lot of the best Iowa kids are gonna be the guys that you don't want 11 of in either lineup. But you do want 9 or 10 of them to go along with the one or two ringers you get from elsewhere.

Fact of the matter is, we're not going to get 22 good starters from out of state, so we have to be able to get 15-18 "glue guys" from within the state (plus a set of adequate reserves) if we're going to be a competitive football team.

hopefully where talent exists but not to a fault like Mac did...can't give the edge to the Iowa guy because he's from Iowa...give the edge to the more talented guy.
