Level of Excitement after hearing from PR

Level 1-10 how excited are you today.

You've had a day to think about it and hear him speak, so a little research. What do you think today?

Re: Level of Excitement after heraing from PR

When I first heard the announcement, I was at a zero as I was expecting head coaching experience. A day later, I've moved up a lot, but I'm going no higher than a 5. I'm ready to be done with pre-season excitement. I'm ready for this era of Cyclone football to either truly begin or end. Paul Rhoads came off very good at the press conference, but Chizik had us all at hello too (but in a different way).

    Amen. I just put a 9, and I'm not sure why I didn't put 10.

I think we got this time what we thought we had last time.

I see that not everyone's excitement is as reserved as mine. Don't get me wrong, I couldn't help but get antsy watching the press conference. I like how he feels about Iowa State. I know it was genuine as he was tearing up. But...

I voted 7 ...Anytime you hire a new football coach who actually wants to be in Ames IA, thats worth a strong seven just by itself!!!

Re: Level of Excitement after heraing from PR

Was it an emotional press conference - sure. Did it make me excited for the coming season and have confidence we will win more than 2 or 3 games - nope. Anybody can get up there and say he'll try hard - God, what would happen if they didn't?!?! I was hoping for someone that was at least a head coach previously. My read on JP is that he got blindsided on the Chizik mess, took it personal and flew all the way on the opposite end of his Chizik hire to make sure it wouldn't happen again. Heck, he may have well as rehired McCarney - it is the same kind of hire in my eyes.

Prove me wrong Paul and win baby win - but untill then put me down for a 3.

I went with 8, just because 10 is out of the question for any hire when the season is so far away. I probably started at a 7 on first hearing the news, just because it was a surprise and not the name I had expected. After reading about him, and especially after the press conference, it quickly went to 8. I expect it to be at 9 or 10 as the season gets closer.

I know the athletic department is out of the "I Chose Iowa State" yard signs, but someone needs to give Paul one as soon as he buys a house!

Re: Level of Excitement after heraing from PR

I was probably at a 1 or 2 yesterday. I was hoping for a big name hire with coaching experiences. After letting it settle for a day I realized we were probably never in the running for a big name coach which makes a DC from Auburn seem a little bit better.

I went with a 6. I'm going to reserve the rest of my levels of excitement for big recruits and big wins.

Re: Level of Excitement after heraing from PR

I'm at a nine because I never like to think that I can't do just a little bit more. I was proud when Chizik came and I thought he boosted the recruiting and overall athleticism a little. I was a little disappointed with the team's play for which I assigned blame to the assistant coaches and final responsibility to Chizik. I thought he responded with the coordinator demotions. I was shocked and disgusted with Chizik's departure because it didn't fit the mold I had for him.

I think Paul Rhodes fits the mold of the head coach we need a ISU. I do reserve a little judgement though until we hear about the assistants that he hires. I watched Johnny Majors build a competitive team by hiring fantastic assistants, recruiting better, putting the best athletes on defense and special teams, putting trick plays in the offense to offset the difference in athleticism, and firing up both the team and the fans. At one of the early Des Moines Cyclone Club meetings, Majors admitted that he would always have Tennessee as his first love but he would give everything he had for Iowa State while he was head coach. He wanted our help (dollars) even though he didn't pronounce help the way we did (southern accent).

Rhodes is sounding like Majors without the accent to me. If he gets some great assistants and fires up team, I'll go to a 10 rating for excitment.

I put down a 6. It's not a flashy hire. But it is the safe pick. Guy from Iowa. Has coached at Iowa State before so he knows what he is getting himself into. My exitement level will go up (or down) with the announcement of the offensive coord.

    I totally understand your sentiments.

I voted for "10". Mainly because he WANTS TO BE HERE. He really wants to be here. That flat out sold me.

I marked '9'. I am an eternal optimist when it comes to ISU athletics, so I probably would have been excited regardless. However, the passion and desire he showed at PC was convincing to me.
