    Wesley Johnson

How was this guy only a **. I dont remember a guy coming into his freshman season that has the confidence that Wesley does. He is playing like an upper classman right now and I just love watchin this guy play. If he can put on 20 lbs, he can be all Big XII next year.

Just one of those diamonds in the rough. I agree, he's going to be something special very soon.

Shows ya how accurate those rating systems are.

    Re: Wesley Johnson

I think his rating is due to the fact that he basically took a year off (because his prep school either closed or dropped basketball, can't remember which), and he fell off the "radar". But he's definitely a gem.

    Re: Wesley Johnson

His prep school closed down in the middle of the season last year so he wasn't heavily recruited. Luckily one of GMac's assistants saw him and once they went to ISU he was a guy they immediately targeted from what I have read. Good thing for us!

    Re: Wesley Johnson

There certainly is some value to these ratings of HS athletes but it is not an exact science for a number of reasons:

    -It is subjective!

-Some of these rating gurus do not even see the kids they rate actually play. This is especially true if a kid doesn't go to certain camps or certain AAU tournaments.

-Often there is a certain "self-fulfilling prophecy" element to the rating. So if Duke is recruiting him then he must be really good...even if we didn't think he was that good when we saw him play at the camp last summer.

-Some kids mature later...not everyone is like Lebron James or Greg Oden and looks 35 their senior year in HS.

-Some kids don't have to try that hard to have success in HS and when they get to college they are able to elevate their game to match the level of play.

Frankly, I think these rating services do a great job in identifying the very best prospects...but how tough is it to see that James or Oden is great. Once you get past the very elite recruits...then it is somewhat of a "crapshoot".

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

    Re: Wesley Johnson

The thing about rankings is, most services agree on who the top 100 or so are. The four and five star rated kids are pretty highly thought of and they are generally regarded as the best by everybody. After that it becomes something of a crapshoot, and that's where we need to excell in recruiting to get to the level we want. I think we have two great prospects in Staiger and Garrett coming in that could be 4 star players, and couple that with Brackins... well you get the idea. Good things for ISU in the future.

It took a moment to figure out you meant a "**" and not a**.
