The point of the JP smokescreen?

what exactly is the point of it?

considering what few jobs are left/available in D1 football, it seems ISU is already in a place of leverage....

I could assume that during a normal search with multiple openings available you want as much pub as possible to put some pressure on the candidates for the job, but its not like ISU is competeing vs any other schools right now.

educate a man on why its neccesary?

So if it falls thru you don't get egg on your face. I watched Arkansas announce 3 different coaches last fall before Petrino finally signed. Jim Grobe was announced, then Tommy Bowden, then Tubberville, and finally Petrino.

Re: The point of the JP smokescreen?

Who says this was a smokescreen by JP? This was all rumor mill brought on by a radio host.

JP just doesn't talk to the media about the coaching search while it happens. And I can see why he doesn't because all his candidates will get slammed on the boards like Stoops did and may end up tipping the scales on whether or not we get a coach.

Re: The point of the JP smokescreen?

Is it even planned on JP's end? I mean, everyone is always trying to figure things like this out. If they don't get an answer they want to hear, it seems like they just want to try and come up with ANY possible answer they can (fabricated or not) if they can't get a solid answer out of anyone that would actually know.

Re: The point of the JP smokescreen?

What smokescreen? He has said nothing. Marty has a proven track record of being wrong. They were dead set on 2 names last time gave both hours of air time then neither were hired. Heck they didnt talk about the top two candates much at all. This week they have picked a different name each day and ran with it. Then they get home read CF and CR and laugh their *** off because we believe every word they say.

I'm still not convinced that last time we really had a smokescreen. I have a feeling this is just an illusion.

I've noticed this is very similar to when Barta hired Lick. Up until Lick was announced, everybody thought it was Dana Altman.

I think ADs like doing this a bit more, especially when this coach will be their stamp on a program.

According to the above article, the Arizona AD said JP has not called for permission to talk to Stoops. That should tell us something.

You wrongly attribute the smokescreen to JP. The "smokescreen" is the chattaering nabobs on the chatboards who hear someone mention a name - Stoops, Patterson, Mason - and think it was from a good source or somehow planted by JP.... We're all very very stupid, but I love this stuff!

No need to talk with Stoops until its more of a done deal. Stoops agent can do all the pre-interviewing prior to us needing permission.

Not adding anything to the Stoops rumor - just the process.

Re: The point of the JP smokescreen?

It all comes down to the fact the JP loves being in the spotlight for whatever reason. And that is fine. he wants people to be in agony over this which creates buzz for him and the program! In the end he needs to get this one right or he will follow the next coach out of town!!

Spotlight what spotlight. He isnt talking. Marty is the one talking. He is the one that likes being talked about.
