    Mike Stoops

I am curious as to why there has not been much talk about Stoops.

I know he has a seemingly bad resume (23-33) but he is very close to turning that program at Arizona around.

He took over an Arizona team that had finished 2-10 (sound familiar?) and over 5 years has his team sitting at 7-5 and is bowling.

If you take a closer look at Arizona's schedule this year, you'll see that all of their seven wins were by two touchdowns or more and had an average margain of victory of nearly 30 points . Their five losses were by a combined 28 points, or 5.6 points per game. One of which was a tightly contested 17-10 loss to USC.

I don't know much about his recruiting ties to the Midwest, but I do know the recruits down south will recognize the name Stoops. Plus, he has a solid recruiting class coming in this year, or at least compared to ISU's. And also, this year, by far Stoops best, was the first year in which he coached a team made up in its entirety of his recruits.

Also, he's familiar with heated in-state rivalries, and bested in-state and preseason ranked rival Arizona State 31-10.

I am not saying his the perfect hire, like, say a Turner Gill, but he has been consistantly building a BCS program (sorry Graham) down there in Arizona and has supposedly expressed interest in ISU. And from the list's I have seen lately, I would say he should be towards the top.

Sorry for exceedingly long post. Hoo-ray first posts!

I would support this hire, but I'd be curious why he would want out of Az?

    Re: Mike Stoops

He's been on the hot seat in Arizona for the last couple of years but it looks like his program has turned the corner at the same time the rest of the Pac 10 sans USC is heading downhill. Maybe there are issues, but from the outside I don't know why he would walk away from what he has invested in the Arizona program to come to ISU.

On the plus side for him, he calls things like he sees them:

Stoops apologizes for calling ASU a 'J.C.'

He has the last name to wow people but nothing in his past says he is anything but mediocre. If Iowa State is going to win and build, it needs somebody that can win, regardless of how many season tickets their name sells the first year or two.

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.

    Re: Mike Stoops

I personally don't like the "Stoops" persona that he and his brother give. In my opinion, both are arrogant and wouldn't fit in well with ISU fans. Bob has backed up his arrogant attitude, his bro has not.

No Hawks or ties to Iowa, paleeeeeeez! If we hire a Stoops, what's to keep us from lowering our standards and hiring a Brands next?

exactly! All he would bring was the annual Stoops v stoops game (similar to former bowden bowl.) Other than that he offers nothing more than what we have seen in the past.

    Re: Mike Stoops

I don't know how much faith you can put in a coach that has only had a experience at non-bcs schools and fcs schools. I think Stoops experience is more closely related to the body of work that lie ahead at ISU than any other candidate.

The MAC and C-USA success does not translate to BCS success IMO.

    Re: Mike Stoops

His experience is similar but it's what he has done during that time that is troubling. Arizona is a program that realistically should have been to this point a year or two ago. He was on his last lifeline before beating ASU to end the season and it's going to be much harder to win in Ames, IA than Arizona.

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.

    Re: Mike Stoops

Wouldn't be a terrible hire IMO. I like the fact he has head coaching experience in a major conference at a job that's difficult to recruit to, compared to the rest of the Pac 10 schools. Obviously Tucson has things to sell a recruit that Ames doesn't (far better climate and population) but compared to the rest of the Pac 10 spots Tucson is the red headed step-child.

It reminds me a bit of the Alford/New Mexico thing. Stoops doesn't feel like he's getting the love at AZ and his time will end the next time his team stumbles and he's looking for another job with a new, longterm contract.

As an added bonus, our game @ Oklahoma in 2010 would probably be on a major network (ABC/ESPN)

    Re: Mike Stoops

    If not Stoops, who else?

Loney- Nice guy, like the enthusiasm. Beyond that....
    Farley-Recruiting killer, good coach though.
Graham-Had success at an already successful Tulsa. Chiziked Rice.
Norvell- No more coordinators please. Please...
Calhoun- Moderate success in MWC doesn't say much
Hill- FSU has been going downhill since early 00's success

I just don't know what coach, aside from Gill, I would want to entrust with our fragile program with. I still gotta go with Stoops.

    Re: Mike Stoops

Little known fact, Calhoun coached against McCarney in Mac's first game.

Ohio - Calhoun was QB coach in '97

This was Calhoun's first job outside Air Force...

    Re: Mike Stoops

The only thing I remember about Mike Stoops is seeing him on the Oklahoma sidelines ranting and spewing profanities. As has been stated here both brothers have big egos, but Bob at least seems to be more in control. I think we can do better than Mike Stoops, but I think I'll defer to JP on that decision.
