    ISU's Record This Century

ATTENTION: All those who think the ISU Head Coach position is a "bad job".

Here is ISU's record this century:

    2000: 9-3
    2001: 7-5
    2002: 7-7

    2003: 2-10
    2004: 7-5
    2005: 7-5

    2006: 4-8

    --> Chizik is hired

    2007: 3-9
    2008: 2-10

The sad thing is, some of those records from 00-06 could have been much better if McCarney was even an average gameday coach (the main reason he was eventually let go).

Most people that support Auburn's hiring of Chizik say that the 5-19 record he compiled here is only because ISU is such a bad program. The facts seem to suggest otherwise.

Nice post. There are lots of other factors to consider but this certainly refutes the notion that ISU is a terrible place to coach.

Nothing to see here mods. Keep moving.

I think the 'Coaching Graveyard' thing has been really overdone too... I think the vast majority of coaches here went on to make a pretty decent living for themselves...

I gotta say I am really liking both your suggestions, Schottenheimer or Strong. I think Strong is a more likely candidate, especially if he can get a key coordinator with Texas recruiting ties. If we could get a pipeline to both Texas and Florida, and I don't think that Strong would forfeit recruiting in state like gc, man watch out!

I think Strong's resume of continued success no matter where he coached is very impressive.

Coaching graveyard = McCarney coaching for the best team in the country and Chizik going to an SEC school. Maybe its a tough place to coach, but careers don't die here.

    Re: ISU's Record This Century

If we would have had a better coach in 2005 that team would have won 9 or 10 games. 3 OT losses and a loss to a bad Baylor team at home. That, and the rest of the North sucked something fierce in '04 and '05.

2005 is the year that Mac lost my support. Everything lined up for ISU that year: we had some talent, the schedule was easy, the North was down - and he still couldn't cash in. It was all downhill from there.

I agree. For the record I think the original poster meant to say our record this decade. Our record for the last century isn't too pretty.

Thanks, I'm thinking of starting up my own coaching search firm

The supposed coaching graveyard may happen at Auburn also.

Looks like ISU should have kept McCarney, imo.

The OP said "ISU's Record This Century", not "ISU's Record Over the Past Century". There's a difference. We have only made it through about 8 years of this 21st century, and there are still 92 left to go. Stating records from 2001-2008 is an accurate summary of this century.

(Technically, the year 2000 was the final year of the 20th century, so that doesn't count in the "this century" block.)

I also remember a game with Kansas when Cy (wore a huge suit then) went out to center field, squatted, and "pooped" a couple of chickens that had been dyed blue then chased them around.

Wow, it is so weird not seeing you with the old signature. I barely recognize you.

Not a bad new one though.

One could argue that Chizik's first year was because McCarney left the cuppoard bare. Can't explain this last year though.

    Re: ISU's Record This Century

How many teams have failed to win their conference in the last 50 years or so?

You can sugar coat statistics by only looking at a few selected years. I would be surprised that there are few football teams in the country that have went as long as Iowa State has and not accomplished more.

My conclusion is that either Iowa State is a coaching graveyard or we have had incredibly bad coaches.

I would say last year is because chezak,John chezak..... knew how to restock the cupboard with grade A product, but not how to put the ingredients together to make a good meal. The players have the talent, they just weren't used in the right way.
