How bad is the ISU FB coaching job

After being on the road for 4 hours today and in waiting rooms for 3 more I listened and read a lot today. One thing that is a theme outside of Iowa, ISU is not a good job. Chizik did get some blame for the bad record. People are saying good coaches will wait for better jobs. They say this is the worse BCS job. They dont understand why Chizik even took the job. Gill wouldnt even look at the job. Is it really that bad in Ames?? I know there were other bad jobs out there, that made good smart hires and now are decent programs. The last theme is ISU should bring Mac back, I dont know why they think that.

Nah, it isn't that bad. Is it a "good" job? Probably not but there are a lot of other schools that weren't good at one point and ended up ok. Think Northwestern, Baylor (not good yet but on their way), Texas Tech, & Kansas.

I think someone will actually be walking into a decent situation if they can get all the current players to stay...

ISU is a pretty tough sell especially on days like this when it is at or below zero with snow. Weather aside, we have no tradition and a small fan base.

Re: How bad is the ISU FB coaching job

It isn't the best, but I think you could do a lot worse. I got into a heated discussion with an idiot EIU fan (never went to college) here in Cedar Falls about this very subject yesterday. The fact of the matter is, the North is ripe for the taking and it is the Big 12 and we have a history of over paying.

Lets wait until the thing is over before we label it a bad job. No idea who Pollard will get yet.

    Lots of shooting-from-the-hip today.

It's not as good of a job as we think it is, but not as bad as they think it is. How's that?

Re: How bad is the ISU FB coaching job

I think its the 11th best in the Big 12. Baylor is the worst IMO because playing in the South is just brutal. Sure, they should be able to recruit better than us but they enter every season knowing they will lose to: Texas, Texas Tech, and Oklahoma. Not to mention Ok State now, who has their program in great shape and when Texas A&M gets back to being a solid program it gets even tougher. Atleast up here we can beat just about any North team on most years.

Re: How bad is the ISU FB coaching job

I don't know how you call ISU the worst BCS job. We've been to more bowl games this decade than 26 (thats HALF!) of the other BCS schools. This perception exists, and it's ********. Have you been to Manhattan KS or Pullman WA or Starkville MS? How about Northwestern where they can't even come close to selling out when the team is 9-3? How about Indiana where no one gives a flying ****? How about Duke and their 22K seat stadium? ISU is not the worst BCS job. You can win here. It can be done, but the more these shills around the country paint us up to suck, the more people buy it.

I honestly think Iowa is just as hard except they have a bit more tradition and they have a coach that is willing to stay. If ISU can get a coach to stay and have some constant success (not talking national championship but a few good bowl games) that will lead to better things. It almost did under McCarney but he allowed them to slip by in OT 2 years in a row.

I always think these things are like the chicken or the egg arguement. A school is good because they got money to spend on their coach/team, they have money to spend on their team because they are good. Something has to start this and unless we have a rich donor to start throwing millions a year at someone to stay, it has to start with winning...

I'll go with tied for 10th with Baylor and Kansas State. Baylor has a recruiting advantage over ISU and Kansas St fans are less forgiving than ISU's.

Re: How bad is the ISU FB coaching job

I really wish we could keep this crap off the board. Its only as bad as the media is making it. There is no reason ISU cant do what Missouri has done, what KU has done. There is no reason for a coach to doubt in his abilities and not come to ISU.

That being said, there is no reason to buy into all of this, Post it all over, ISU being a bad school to coach at, the national view of ISU being bad. In my opinion, it doesnt help to have this crap posted on a board that many coaches and players read. As if they need another nail in their coffin.

How about this: Is there a public BCS school that's harder to win at than ISU? You could argue Wash St, but they have a BCS game in their recent past.
