How should Jamie Pollard approach the hiring of a new fooball coach? Pick the top one or two candidates and hire fast or conduct a national search and choose one

I voted for the first, but only if they are able to narrow targets and get their man out of the gate. If it doesn't look good, may be better to take time.

    Re: POLL...How to conduct search

Keep in mind finals are this week.

If we spend too much time putting together a "search committee" and conducting a drawn out hiring process we risk losing current players and recruits. They need to know what's going to happen soon.

    on the flip side.

If we conduct a sloppy search and make a bad pick, it will haunt us in the long run.

I say if there are a couple candidates that make sense and want to be here, go ahead and move forward with them. Time is of the essence!

    Re: POLL...How to conduct search

He needs to conduct a national search...I know everyone wants to panic about the situation right now, but you have to think about the long term. You want to bring in a guy who can coach here for a long time, and that is hit or miss if you only look at one or two candidates.

Sure, maybe some players will leave due to the longer search, but most will stay, and the long term direction of the program will be better for it.

    Re: POLL...How to conduct search

Talk to about 10 prospects over the phone and gauge their interest. Narrow it to 3-5 from there. Meet with them personally, in order of your interest in them and offer your 1st choice and see and maybe offer your 2nd choice. Take it from there.

Im sure i way off base, but contact needs to be made early, like this last Friday night. A "national search" can be done rather fast.

The only real choice is to move quickly. I believe either way, the athletic department is in trouble.

    Re: POLL...How to conduct search

I'm not going to start a new thread for this...but what is the OVER / UNDER on when we will get an "OFFICIAL" announcement (press conference) for the new coach. My vote is one week from today (Sunday).

    Re: POLL...How to conduct search

Well, I'm sure Pollard already has 2-3 candidates that he REALLY wants to go after already. I'm sure he's already has or is trying to make contact with them. He will interview a couple of candidates and if neither of them show interest or a deal can't be made, you keep going down your list until you get someone. That's how it works. Like someone else said, a "national search" can be done rather quickly. It's not like we are going to mail them a letter to gauge their interest. I would be surprised if Jamie hasn't conducted any interviews by Tuesday/Wednesday. At the longest, we will have a new head coach within a week or week and a half.

Agreed. There are some people that I'm sure he will contact quickly (e.g. Gill) to gauge interest. If the top candidates take the job then there's no need to search any farther. If not, then the search is broadened. Its not really an either/or scenario.

I hope he sells the coordinator salaries as a benefit...and then the new coach uses them like we wished **** would have.
