Coaching candidates - let's think outside the box

We need something different. In no particular order, here are four fantastic "outside-the-box" candidates:

    1. Hayden Fry, retired

We know he can rebuild a program, he's done it several times, and ISU 2008 is in a lot better shape than Iowa 1979. He retired before coaching salaries exploded and he might go for a $1.5-2 million dollar job, he could make in a year what he made in 10 years when he was coaching. And who could better school Kirk than his mentor?

    2. Jamie Pollard, ISU AD

Let him hold dual roles as HC and AD. It's been done a lot before, most notably at his former employer where Barry Alvarez was both the head football coach and athletic director for several years before relinquishing his coaching duties. As he keeps telling us we need money and what better way to save money then to have one person doing two jobs? And he would be great at it, after all, he has all the answers. If you don't believe that, just ask him and he'll tell you.

    3. Mike Sanford, HC, UNLV

This guy is always feeling the heat at UNLV and despite lack of stability, has done a solid job there. He also brings two other benefits: He already knows his way around the Jacobsen Building and he will talk to us about the job. We know the last part is true because the last time Mike was in Ames, I heard him say very clearly, "I need to talk to your athletic director."

    4. Dave McCartney

No relation to anyone we know, but if anyone can take ISU to a bowl game, it's this guy.

Gene Smith, 1993-2000. 7 years, 6 NCAA's, 1 bowl game. Revenue sports postseason participation 50%. Good.
    Bruce Vandevelde, 2000-20005. 5 years, 4 bowl games, 2 NCAA's, 2 NIT's. Postseason participation 80%. Better.
    Jamie Pollard, 2005-. 4 years. 1 bowl game, 0 NCAA's, 0 NIT's. Postseason participation: 13%. The next big step.

My ignore list: splitidentity, tarheelhawk, superdorf, clones_jer. That is all.

When I first saw this thread I was going to yell at you for posting another "outside the box" thread. We already had one of those, it was Herm Edwards. But then I looked and realized you were thinking WAAAAAYYYYY outside the box, well played. Dave McCarney is hilarious, but there is no "t".

Yes there is. Dave McCartney is not related to Dan McCarney. Dave has a "t".

Where are you with the calls for Ditka? Imagine Ditka vs. Iowa we'd win by 80, and if Hurricane Ditka struck we'd win by at least 1,000.
