Re: Hlas column in Gazette - fine read

I don't like. The guy takes shots at ISU throughout the article.

He also lays the blame at Pollard's feet. Well, hindsight is 20/20. The talking heads can all say, Pollard picked the wrong guy when he didn't pick Kelly but that is now. At the time, Pollard got arguable the hottest coach in the country to come to Ames, IA. He got his guy and the guy that most of Cyclone nation was dreaming about (I'll admit that I wanted Harbaugh). How was Pollard to know he would stink as a HC? How could he know he would bail after 2 years of terrible football? How could he know? This is not Pollard's fault. He was lied to just like the rest of us. He believed in GC, just like we did. It isn't Pollard's fault.

With all that said, however, Pollard gets one more chance to get this right. You don't get to hire two HCs and not get one right. Better choose wisely, JP. You are on a short leash.

But, if it's not JP's fault, why does he only get one more chance? Seems like a contradiction in there someplace.

Hlas isn't an ISU fan, that's not his role (he's been my friend for 27 years and I know that he's not an eiu fan, either, although others here disagree).

Personally, I don't believe JP should be blamed for the Chizik folly, one can only know so much about a coaching candidate, and GC seemed to be a good choice. But, rightly or wrongly, a program must be seen to be treading upward. If a tipping point is reached, JP will most likely face an unhappy reality.

I admit it, I'm kinda excited about a new beginning now that we've been forced to begin anew. Hope we make the best of it.

    Good read.

I really question his thought that UNI has the number 2 football team in the state. They're doing well in their league, but is a different league. I was at the UNI game yesterday and 12,000 fans for a play off game and the place wasn't even sold out!

After emerging from an inflatable Cyclones "helmet" filled with smoke, Chizik got all humble and said "I couldn't be more pleased that Iowa State University is the institution providing me this opportunity."

That helmet wasn't the only thing billowing smoke

Can't say that I really agree with the article in a lot of ways, and I don't think it's especially well written either.

The Panthers defeated ISU a year ago; you don't believe UNI would have won this fall had the two teams met again? A case can be made, can't it?

Hmmm. I'm one (of the few here, probably) who'd like to see what Farley could do in Ames. He knows the game, he's Iowan, his unpolished quality right now for me is pretty darn attractive. I'm thinkin' just give us a guy who is first and foremost a football coach.

Not debating that. Just saying ISU draws 45 to 50 thousand fans every game, plays in the Big 12, and pays 4 or 5 times the UNI job. Apple and orange comparison.

Pelini is not polished either. He just wins. Is that not what it is all about? Winning?

Refer to Terry Allen's record and performance at KU.

Yeah. I see that. It depends on the criteria one chooses to make to make comparisons. But ISU's Big 12 membership and its larger crowds just drive home even more powerfully how unlikely a UNI victory should be.

Get the right coach, and this light-hearted argument goes away ;-)
