    Bolt's Dismissal ???

Anyone know why Bolt was dismissed a year ago. The Register stated that while he was out of work he had bypass surgery. He certainly has to be a much healthier individual after dropping 220 pounds. But my curiosity is still why was he dismissed???

    Re: Bolt's Dismissal ???

He was fired from UAB, I would assume do to the performance of the Defense. I've seen the excuse used that his health may have had to do with the performance in his job. I can understand that considering he took a year off to get his health in order. Had some pretty good defenses at Troy.

    Re: Bolt's Dismissal ???

Brent Blum was on Jon Miller's show today and insinuated that he lost his job due in large part to his weight. Apparently it was thought that his weight was getting in the way of putting 100% into his job there.

    Re: Bolt's Dismissal ???

Some people have commented that he may have been a scapegoat for the staff not winning enough. Dismissing him was not a cure-all. I took a quick look at UAB's stats and it appears that the 2 years under Bolt were better than the 2 years before him and the year after he left.

    Re: Bolt's Dismissal ???

What I have read into the situation is that UAB had some problems in the program and he was somewhat the victim of this. It also should be noted that he was only there for two years I think, so the talent on the field was not his own. Also have heard that the weight may have been a factor. All in all these are just excuses, but my point is that when I look at what he did at Troy we might be getting someone far better than how he looks on paper the last couple of year.

I think someone who can dedicate themselves to losing that much weight is someone who will be able to dedicate themselves to this program.

i am not too sure of this hiring, especially if hes getting dropped by UAB, but i wont doubt chizik. Hopefully he can bring something more to the table than that sort of track record.

    Re: Bolt's Dismissal ???

I think a lot of you are forgetting who our head coach is. Chizik is first and foremost a defense guy. I'm thinking he is going to handle a lot of the defensive philosophies as head coach. I think Bolt is just someone that Chizik trusts to enforce these philosophies. I wouldn't worry too much about who our DC is as long as Chizik is HC.

    Re: Bolt's Dismissal ???

Exactly! Bolt was hired because he has similar defensive philosophies to Chizik. It is very understanding how his weight issues could have gotten in the way, that guy was bigggggggggggg!!!!! Man, I would be surprised if he didn't have to sit after a few steps! Should have given him his own cart to patrol the sidelines in!!

    Re: Bolt's Dismissal ???

I think that if they guy actually weighed 500lbs, this had to affect his ability to coach. Hopefully he works out . . . his resume isn't stellar, but I think the people at the top of the program aren't going to hire someone terrible.

    Re: Bolt's Dismissal ???

I have no idea why Bolt parted ways with UAB. However, I can understand the concern that some of you have about these "no-name coaches"...it is typical to fear the unknown.

However, there appears to be a pattern developing in the assistant coach hiring process:

-We are hiring from programs that do not necessarily get the top line recruits year in and year out. UAB just moved to D-I in the mid '90s and they have to recruit against Alabama, Auburn, FSU, Georgia, LSU, etc. They have had to recruit kids with potential and "coach them up" as they say. Frankly, they have been quite successful. Watson Brown was at UAB the exact same years as McCarney was at ISU and his record is better...62-74 versus McCarney's 56-85 (remember that UAB just went D-I in his first or second season). Alabama and Auburn won't play them but they have scheduled numerous SEC, ACC, and Big 12 teams over the last 10-12 years...putting scares into many and actually beating some of them (including LSU). Ditto for Troy which went D-I in 2002. Obviously, SFA gets guys that UT and A&M don't have scholarships for. I think he is looking for guys that can develop players.

-Hiring coaches that have contacts in very deep recruiting areas...UT, A&M, Alabama, Auburn, etc. can't sign everybody! Make no mistake, we are probably not going to be stealing the top recruit in Texas away from UT or A&M or the top recruit in Alabama away from Auburn or Alabama. But if we can get the best of the rest in these talent deep states...guys that are diamonds in the rought that can be coached into greatness...good things are in store!

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.
