Wieben, Nisleit jump in as ISU crushes Drake

    From the DMR:

Nicky Wieben and Amanda Nisleit took to coming off the bench as if they'd been doing it all along.

Held out of Iowa State's starting lineup because coach Bill Fennelly wanted to shake things up, Wieben and Nisleit contributed in a big way once they got in Thursday night, and led the Cyclones to a 65-52 women's basketball victory over Drake.

Both did most of their damage on the low block against the shorter Bulldogs, who built a 10-point lead in the first half, then were done in by a scoring drought that spanned the two halves and lasted almost 10 minutes.

Wieben scored 19 points on 8-for-11 shooting and grabbed nine rebounds. Nisleit made all six of her shots from the field, scored a career-high 16 points and pulled down five rebounds.

Great second half last night. I truly believe that the Sisters can take the momentum of the second half and keep it up and not just against Detroit Mercy this Sunday but also against Minnesota the following week.

Nicky had a great game, in fact, offensively, that was the Nicky of last season. Keep it up Nicky, the Sisters are a different team without you.

Also kudos to Heather for breaking the 1000 point mark.. Congrats.

Nice to see our veteran post players step up.

This team has too good of talent, and too good of a coach to not have a good season. I think that Iowa game is behind them, and they are going to make a great run.

(I really hope they crush Minnesota this year...I'm trying to sucker a U of M WBB fan into a bet on this year's game.)

I watched the game and IMO this team "found itself" last night. I'm hoping for big things.

Re: Wieben, Nisleit jump in as ISU crushes Drake

Nis had a great game, but the difference was Nicky. She was a non-factor in the Iowa game: I'm not sure if it was the coaching staff not calling plays for her, the team not looking to pass it to her, or her not working for position well enough, but she hardly touched the ball.

In this game once the team started getting her the ball down low, Drake was finished. She has great post moves. I know Drake was a bit undersized, but they weren't THAT small. She just tore them apart. The only defense they had against her was having a second defender collapse on her to try to strip it away, which did work a couple times.

In my opinion, it takes a bad performance for a team to realize it's potential.

This is the start of great things from Bill and this team!

I agree that Wieben is the key to success when she is agressive. Note in BF press conference, he specifically talked about her toughening up mentioning at Iowa how she had 2 rebounds ripped from her and put back for layups. I don't think Drake was too undersized. Their post was 6'3" with good post build, and Nicky is 6'4".

I am also looking for Bolte to step up a bit. Her shots seem off, but she seems to be the best driver on the team.

I love Ezell, but I am not crazy about her running point. Quick guards seem to give her trouble bringing the ball up and she stands sideways to the offense to dribble which cuts 1/2 her vision of the offense off and only allows her to pass one direction, instead of down the middle, or to the right or left. I really am hoping Williams develops quick, cause that girl can dish.

Not a bad win at all. If Drake's anything like they were last year it's a pretty good win actually. However, now we've got bigger fish to fry.

13 point win is crushing someone?

Looks like with less than 4:00 left in the game they were up by 18 and Drake went on a 7-2 run in the last 2:30 in what was basically the equivalent of garbage time to make the score look closer than it really was at the end of the game.

Obviously you didn't see the second half. The second string line up went in with about 2 minutes left and Drake made some meaningless baskets to cut the lead. I don't know how much we were up before, but it had to be close to 20- that after trailing at half.

Once things clicked, yeah, we tore them apart. 31-4 run over a 17-minute period, and it wasn't because Drake just got cold from the field. The defense just completely shut them down and the offense was unstoppable.

At the 3:54 mark of the first half, Drake was up 29-19. With 8 minutes left in the game, it was 50-33 ISU. It was 63-45 with a little over 2 minutes left when Fennelly put in five new players to finish out the game.

I really liked how most of the crowd stayed for all the game. And thanks to those students who also support ISU WBB.
