New Rules Regarding Speaking out against Refs???

Anyody else hear about this? Almost seems like it's going to make refs less accountable for bad calls. I always thought that refs get paid, and that it's their job, they should be required to do it well. I'm not super upset about the new rule, but I'm kinda curious what other people think. I just don't see how being a ref should be treated differently than other professions. Politicians speak against some of the calls the President of the United states make, we should probably fine them too, or 'penalize' them, whatever that means.
    MEMORANDUM

    TO: Athletics Directors.

    FROM: XXXXXXXXXXXX

    DATE: December 8, 2006.

    SUBJECT: Conference Sportsmanship Policy.

This is to inform you that the Board of Directors voted unanimously at their December 1 meeting to amend the Conference Sportsmanship Principles in order to prohibit any public comment on officiating, effective January 1, 2007. Until then, we will continue to enforce the current policy set forth in Section 5-(d) of the Sportsmanship Principles (Conference Handbook, Appendix II, page 31), which requires administrators, coaches and student-athletes to “refrain from making public comments critical of officials or the quality of their work.” After January 1, we will penalize any coach, student-athlete or administrator who makes any comment about officiating, regardless of whether it is negative in nature. In taking its action, the Board stated that anyone questioned about officiating should only state that the Conference policy prohibits comment.

In addition, the Board indicated that the Sportsmanship Policy applies to presidents and chancellors, as well as Conference office staff. The Board directed the staff to create a draft of sportsmanship rules outlining these elements, as well as a streamlined process for handling violations, which the Board will consider for adoption at its March meeting. The governance groups will be provided with the draft of the new rules prior to the Board’s consideration. Finally, the Board also will be informed of the processes used to evaluate officials.

We will rely on you to forward this notice to all of your coaches, including assistants, and other staff members. Please also request that the coaching staff share this information with their student-athletes.

Thank you for your attention to this matter and feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Great, make them think it is ok to be incompetent while reffing a game. What a joke.

I love this rule. It's my favorite along with the new NCAA football clock rules...

Can we contribute this rule to the Oklahoma response to the Oregon State game?

Re: New Rules Regarding Speaking out against Refs???

I'm not wanting to get a headache here, but I read the initial post once and I thought it insinuates that ALL comments about officiating will not be tolerated. Previous policy prevented negative remarks. This change in policy would shut up a certain Missouri coach who lack a professional candor.

Now...what can we do to get the commissioner of Big 12 officials to keep his mouth shut as well?
Let the media criticize officiating. Let the coaches and the officials keep their mouths shut. Oh, let the fans be critical as well.

Re: New Rules Regarding Speaking out against Refs???

Ok, this letter does not say anything about positive comments towards the refs. So its telling me that it wants to follow the childish rule of, "If you cant say anything nice, then dont say anything at all"

This is just about as bad as the clock rule. Actually I think it is worse. Now the refs really are not accountable for anything they call. And doesnt this limit our freedom of speach amendment.

What if a meteorologist was a college football official on the weekends?
Some guy could go thru life getting only a few things right and never have to answer to anyone, ever.

Re: New Rules Regarding Speaking out against Refs???

in my opinion.... if a reporter asks: what did you think of this call or that call, a coach should ask that reporter to leave... they now know that coaches can not say a thing about a call.

    take back the press conference!!

No offense to any aspirating female football referees, but to the refs who can't take criticism--grow a pair.

Re: New Rules Regarding Speaking out against Refs???

I don't think it's that big of a deal. I don't understand the "regardless whether it is negative in nature" part....no compliments either?

Sure it'll shut up coaches, but there will still be media and fan outcries to put pressure on bad officiating.

Edit:After posting this somebody wrote "nobody from iowa city should have a rep that high, cheater"...I'm actually not from Iowa City, and I'm an Iowa State fan. Please refrain from giving me negative comments that make no sense.
