    Reality check

Tim Floyd's last team (97-98) went 12-18. LE's first team (98-99) went 15-15. They had 2 players that ended up in the NBA. Those teams were thin at guard positions, but they had more overall talent than the current Cyclones. Larry called his first team "fragile." All I'm saying is maybe some of us, myself included, were expecting too much. We probably just need to take our lumps, not scream too loudly, and look for the silver lining. I think now, a .500 record would be close to miraculous.

    Re: Reality check

    Well said...
GMac came into this season basically with a bare cupboard. Imagine how much worse this season might be if he hadn't been able to nab Taylor, McIntosh or W. Johnson?
It's tough losing - I hate it as much as anyone. But, we need to trust GMac to re-build the program the right way. Patience is required by all at this point...

    Re: Reality check

Agreed. I think the only loss that I didn't expect was Drake. Other than that, losing to UNI away and Iowa away should have been expected in my opinion. I think that the biggest concern people have though isn't the current record, but the way the team is losing. There hasn't been improved post play, and the turnovers are unacceptable. I don't think we can judge the coaching on the first 9 or 10 games of a season though. I for one will enjoy what I can this season and look at it as a whole when it's over. Hopefully I can say at the end of big 12 play that I saw much improved play in the big men and turnovers were way down from when we played Iowa earlier in the year.

    Re: Reality check

I'm not too worried about the W-L record this season. Coach McDermott has said this season will be about showing continued improvement. He also said that Friday night's game was really the first game where the team took a step backward, which is disappointing. But overall, if the trend is continued improvement, I'm going to be satisfied that the program is moving in the right direction.

    Re: Reality check

Pre-season I did think we'd have troubles against UNI and Iowa.

During the season, I felt the same about UNI. However, not Iowa. They looked as bad, if not worse than we did.

IMO, we lost 2 games we never should have - Drake and Iowa. Back-to-back too.

Hopefully G-Mac can get us back on track with a pair of wins before we face Ohio State.

    Re: Reality check

I have not been able to see any of the games (they don't televise ISU much in the KC area), but I was wondering whether it looked as if Mac had the attention of the players. Are they ready to learn? Are they ready to be taught? If this has not happened yet, this will be a long, long season because the learning needs to start now.

    Re: Reality check

I'm fine with a "rebuilding year" but I'm not going to give GMac a free pass at player and team development.

He doesn't have a full arsenal to coach but the cupboard isn't completely bare either. We are only 1/3 of the way into the season so their is still plenty of time to see improvement and I expect to see some.

(KC area must be a lot like NE Iowa. I have only seen 2 games)
This is what really bothers me, are the players listening? Jiri needs to be under the basket but how often is he there? GMac has been telling Taylor to slow down all year, and I would assume he also tells him to be more selective in his shots. That's not happening. After the Iowa game, GMac said, paraphrased, "Can we look at our mistakes and learn from them, or will we keep making them?" I think that says it all.

    Re: Reality check

Going into this season I was hoping to win sixteen or seventeen games and get an NIT bid. Now I just hope we see some improvement and this season isnt just a complete total loss.

Oh well Spring is just around the corner as they say!!
