Re: Eustachy not driven to drink

I miss that guy. He could coach. However, I will probably get slammed by many for my next comment....Alcoholism is not a disease, its a choice.

I really didn't understand what alcoholism was. I was diagnosed prior to my firing, but I didn't understand
Diagnosed? How about realized. My father is an alcoholic, and calling it a disease is a disrespectful to the real diseases in the world like cancer. People who get cancer don't have the choice. People with alcoholism made the decision to pick up that drink and the next and the next and continue that lifestyle. They have the choice to stop doing it as well. It can be difficult because of addiction, but the addiction is a direct result of the choices made earlier, and CAN BE changed. Diseases are often genetically handed down to future generation. Drinking is learned and has no genetic hand-me-downs.

Can we please not turn this thread into a "Why we shouldn't have fired LE" thread?

Good to hear he has overcome some deamons. Thanks for all you did at Iowa State. Best of Luck at Southern Miss.

It's too bad Larry didn't recognize it either after he was diagnosed. It was interesting to hear him say that in the ISU "fishbowl" a comeback would have too difficult.

That may be altogether too reasonable for the Internet, sir, but it's a fine idea. Or maybe we have to ask you to leave. It's hard to say.

Re: Eustachy not driven to drink

I think Alcoholism is a disease to an extent. Some people have a family history of it being a problem. That being said, it's not a disease if you don't buy it, go to a bar or drink it.

I could work with that. All the guys on my side of the family have been alcoholics until me. All that drinking killed my dad about 28 years ago.

I'm just glad that I was able to make the choice not to be drinking. As intensely as I pursue things, I'd have raced him to an early grave.

Well, I'm not gonna get real worked up about this but I thought it was pretty well understood that a "susceptibility to addiction" is a heritable trait. Keeping that in mind during the rest of your life my advice would be to never get into any addicting habits. We deal with this in my family and act responsibly 100% of the time. None of my generation has had a problem.

I've always said it's better to not drink at all then to drink too much. If one can't control his/her limits, then its never a good idea.

Besides, we all know CycloneErik's real addiction is for Cyclone Fanatic mafia/survivor games.

True to all of this post.

I should point out that it's not the competition I'm addicted to. It's all the winning!!!

    4x Mafia winner
1st and only Sole Survivor, until the repeat is completed.

By the way, we still need two more Survivors. Sign up, folks!

You can't help those who don't want help. I doubt Larry was wanting help until everything hit the fan. There are ah-ha type moments in life and him getting called out and losing his job motivated him to change. There wasn't anything ISU could do prior to that without LE wanting to help himself.
