    Defensive End Visit--Delano Johnson

With a gaping hole at strongside end (three seniors graduate), it's the position I've been worried about most for next Fall. Taylor Martin and Cleyon Laing, obviously, are the first into the breach, but I've been looking for more. Yes, I prefer to sign high school kids, but this (long with safety) was one spot we needed an immediate patch.

Well, Scout (free info) says that Delano Johnson will be visiting in late January. He's a guy who's been on the edge of the radar since Summer, and who caught my eye with his size and listed speed (6-5 265 4.65). Unfortunately, if he's visiting that late, it seems he wouldn't be on campus for Spring semester, but I'd feel a little better about next season if we could sign this one. He's also visiting Minnesota and K-State.

My bet is he'll go to K-State now that Snyder is back.

    Hope I'm wrong.

That would be great, but if he's visiting the 23rd, I'm guessing that's after the semester starts.

    Re: Defensive End Visit--Delano Johnson

I've seen Delano's video, he is definitely strong enough to come in and play big 12 ball. And he is very fast - flat out running, a lot of plays chasing down RB out wide - thats speed. The one thing i didnt see was a great burst off the line. This is where i think we need the most help, an outside presence off the edge to disrupt those pockets.....thats all we saw last year was the qb not getting any pressure. Even if someone was undersized or not the perfect fit, we need some form of pressure - we need a legit speed rusher. I think IMO, he's a lot like Kurtis Taylor, extremely strong at the point of attack, very dedicated to stopping the run and may get an occasional sack. But will not be disruptive.

I would love to see anyone, be it someone we already have, or someone that is or may be coming in, i would love to see a speed rusher. Somebody that puts early pressure and if nothing else, simply throws off the timing on the west coast - spread offense.

Hopefully, thats what our RS Roosevelt Maggitt or Cleyon Laing are going to be. Whenever you have early pressure off the edge, it disrupts timing and causes mistakes or misses on wide open receivers. We saw some nice plays by our secondary, but, its a double edged sword, we need to be able to tighten up our secondary while increasing our pressure. If Chizik can do that, our defense will improve greatly and he can begin to dial up the intensity and aggressiveness that he's been known to enjoy!!!!

I think that Maggitt is the guy. The offensive coaches have said that they had a hard time blocking him on the scout team. He may not be an every down player, but he's going to see time rushing the passer.

If they somehow get Dye, there would be two speed rushers to throw in there on third and long.

I hope your right on Maggitt, that would be awesome. Just as i originally thought Parker was going to be that guy, he has not produced as much as earlier in his career, maybe he was banged up or bulked up too much and lost a little speed. You don't need two speed rush ends to cause the OL and QB fits...early pressure out wide, force him to step up into the DT and blitzing LB and suddenly that window has been reduced by about 6 seconds that the opposing qb's were allowed to sit back and survey the field - OH YEAH THERES SOMEONE OPEN - DIDNT SEE HIM AT FIRST!!!!!

And as much as i would love to see Dye come to ISU, i still think were fighting a couple of tough teams for his services....I truly hope the playing time as a true freshman is a big thing, because look at our squad, its quite evident that the best players regardless of class will see time. He goes to Alabama or the U, my guess is he don't see the field as a true freshman and even if he does, do you want to blow a year of eligibility on a handfull of plays when you could be rotating in on every series!!!!!
