    Rick Hartzell

I apologize if this is a dead horse subject (avoiding the boards) but I believe I heard Walters say he was one of the refs last night. Am I alone in thinking that Mac's old boss should not be officiating our games? I mean just for appearances sake. Why bring that into the equation of a game? Whether he favors Mac, doesn't like Mac, or is completely neutral it just seams like a bad idea. This should be referee scheduling 101.

    Re: Rick Hartzell

I was not aware Hartzell was even officiating games. Although I do not blame the refs for last nights loss, I don't think it helps ISU having Hartzell ref a single game McDermott coaches in, but honestly it is going to happen and there is nothing you can do about it.

The reason we did not get as many fouls called in our favor last night was because ISU could not drive the hoop or get the ball inside to even attempt to draw a few fouls. Drake, on the other hand, did a much better job at that!

Don't forget that Higgins was their last night too. He hates us.

    Re: Rick Hartzell

Holy crap, you read my mind. I was just getting ready to start another thread about this. Hartzell should not be officiating these games. He called the foul both times on Drake's "and 1" plays and also called 2 unbelievably questionable calls on Lucca and Alex during dead ball situations. Sitting right behind Drake's bench, he was BSing with Phelps during 3 time out breaks. I find it hard to believe that ISU actually committed 19 fouls last night to Drake's 12. Maybe I'm still a little angry but being McDermott's former boss doesn't make this sit well with me. Tim Donaghy anyone??

I think the refs are the last people I would blame for this loss. I would start with coaching and end with player attitude.

I never blamed the officiating and that wasn't really my intent. I just think it's a bad idea to have him do our games. A really bad idea.

    +1

An unbelievably short and accurate synopsis of the game.

    Re: Rick Hartzell

I see no problem with him refing ISU games. That is his job and he is a professional in his approach. I don't think RH would let his personal feelings or whatever get in the way of him doing his job. Quit ******** about the refs...look at the players and coaches.

Did ISU hire him or did the Valley assign him?

Yeesh, have you people ever heard of conflict of interest? Normally you would avoid putting yourself in a position to where your interests can be questioned because it is the right and safe thing to do. I don't care how much faith you have in a guy's 'professionalism' you should not put anyone in that sort of position because it opens them up to personal attack even if no bias is displayed.

If anything, it is unprofessional of those assigning officials to put one of their own in such a position.

That's a bunch of crap. Where do you draw the line then? Are you saying that refs can't work game that feature teams that are in a conference they USED to be affiliated with? Are you saying a ref can't work a Duke game because he liked duke when he was growing up?

Rick Hartzell does not work for UNI. He was no affiliations with ISU or Drake. You can't just say refs can't work these games because they know people on teams or coaching staffs. They are professionals. Besides, what would he gain from screwing ISU out of games? Mac is HIS friend. I'm sure the Drake fans probably are having this argument and saying the oppisite thing.

I'm glad to see Vanillathrilla once again standing up for RH. Rick has a massive ego that is why he is not the AD at UNI.
