Memories of Christmas Music and home

I am such a softie when it comes to childhood memories and songs of the season. I suppose we all have that special "something" that speaks to us about Christmas day, and without that "something" it just isn't the same.
Perhaps, for you, it is an aroma, or a special ornate sweater worn by "mom" or maybe a bible passage read by dad before gifts are opened on Christmas Eve.
For me, it is the music of the season. Without Mannheim Steamroller's Silent Night, Celine Deon's O Holy Night, and I don't care by whom........ Little Drummer Boy, I sometimes have difficulty getting into the Christmas spirit. So, I cheat, and start playing them, well,...... this evening..... plenty of time to enjoy them, before that wonderful day, when we celebrate the birth of our Lord.

Happiest of Holidays and Merry Christmas

Elvis, Blue Christmas. I wonder if it affected me in any kind of way?

Hey Bubba, when you listen to Blue Christmas, do you put on suede shoes that happen to be blue, too?

I actually did have a pair of blue suede shoes, but I lost them in the getto, searching for my hound dog, now they are always on my mind. I keep wondering if they are lonesome tonight, or at a clambake, or if we'll never meet again, but I can't help falling in love, so I just bought a teddybear.

    Very clever
Other than the king's Blue Christmas, what reminds you of Christmas at home?
I'm thinking maybe I am too old to start this thread, cause all I do is reminisce!

Re: Memories of Christmas Music and home

Enjoy going to asseenontv.com and getting people things they have absolutely no need for.
Things they would never buy on their own.
And any excuse to go to Mulberry Lane's website after I hear "Christmas in Iowa" to see any new pictures they have up.
Also the Christmas football game with Dad and my brothers. The Thanksgiving game got me a cracked rib this year so I'm hoping to pay back dad for that one at Christmas. That's the spirit.
And the candlelight service at my home church back in Aplington as we sing "Silent Night" a capella with the 3 ex-music teachers at the church that descant above everyone else as the flame is being passed around and the lights come back on as we sing "Joy to the World."
And this year-watching my almost 3-year old daughter light up any time we turn on the tree, and helping pick out presents for everyone.
And its the one time a year that we head back up to visit my grandparents and my 18 cousins (I am the oldest) will all be around and how we all crowd into a picture with Grandma and Grandpa every year and seeing the pride on their faces. The joke never gets old when we tell them "this is all your fault."

My mom made carmel every year. It had such a distinctive smell, I can picture the smell in my head, if that makes any sense. Lots of snow, because we would always go to northern Wisconsin for the week of Christmas. Now I get to relive all the Christmas specials with the kiddies. Rudolph and Charlie Brown never get old. Hopefully when they see Polar Express with their kids, they will think of me and the first time they saw it.

Re: Memories of Christmas Music and home

OK. My dad sitting in the recliner, listening to the Johnny Cash Christmas album. And when "Little Drummer Boy" played, he would sit and rock and tap his fingers to the music.

My dad was one tough old dude. A truck driver with a body shaped like a pencil point. To see him sit and be moved by music is a sight I'll never forget.

On his deathbed, I was playing Alan Jackson for him. When the song "Remember When" came on, he stood up and slow-danced with my mother. He laid back down and never stood again. So thinking about him and music and how it moved him - always makes me teary-eyed.

BY FAR my favorite Christmas memory.

At least there are a few of us left who appreciate what the King meant to music.
