    Coach McDermott and JUCO players....

I was thinking earlier today about our ugly loss last night and how poorly the backcourt played, and being a fan of both UNI and ISU (grew up in Ames, went to school at UNI) I've followed McDermott for a little while.

I don't think McDermott actively recruited many JUCO players while he was at UNI. I think he inherited some from Sam Weaver, but even if he did, they were complimentary/role players at the most.

Now, he is forced to start two of them in the backcourt, and the performance has been uneven at best. I think that sometimes JUCO players can develop bad habits the first two years they play, and it can be hard to rid them of bad habits at first. I wonder if that might be one of the issues we're currently facing with McIntosh and Taylor right now.

I think it's a little too early to call McIntosh a bust, but I would really like to see Dunson starting ahead of him at this point. I hate to be critical of young student-athletes who are trying their best and have to perform on the stages that they do, but right now McIntosh just isn't doing much for this team at all and might be better served by coming off the bench. In 14 mintues last night he didn't attempt a shot or a free throw, had 1 rebound, 3 turnovers, and no assists.

I'm not demanding that he be the next Jamaal Tinsley or Will Blaylock, but our starting point guard can't have that shallow of a stat line, plain and simple.

Re: Coach McDermott and JUCO players....

I think we just need to relax and realize that there will be nights like last night several times this season probably. This is a patchwork and entirely new team we have that will need to learn it's roles as the season goes on. We don't have much of an inside presence and if we get any injuries it will be even more of a challenge. Remember, most of these guys were brought into the system very late in the recruiting stage and while that is not a knock on their talent, it means they weren't good enough to attract big time school recruiting early on. I think we definately found a diamond in the rough with Wesley Johnson though.

Be patient, we all knew this season was going to have its ups and downs. Some of them may be extreme at times but we need to stick to the long-term and big picture plan.

Well early on two of his best players were transfers one from a JUCO and one form a small Iowa College, David Gruber from Kirkwood and Matt Schneiderman, so he has experience with transfers being big contributors!

I think last night is the perfect example for coach to show the players on film what happens when you don't listen to him.

Excellent call on that one, BigBake. GMac needs to put the pedal down in showing these guys who's boss and who they'd better listen to if they want to do anything decent this season.

I think you got a viable theory there. He just may not be getting thru to these guys yet.

Re: Coach McDermott and JUCO players....

There were reasons why McIntosh and Taylor were still available so late last year, but Gmac did not have many options. He had ZERO scholarship guards when he took over. I think when we get angry at our guard play, we should maybe think about that and be grateful Taylor and McIntosh decided to play for ISU. It could've been disasterous. Like a 3 win season disaster. I think we'll at least make it to 10 or 12 this year.
