I've never seen Wempa play so fill me in on why you feel this is a good get? I'm really ok with anyone the staff takes; however, I'm not going to give the recruiting is improving talk serious consideration when UTEP is the school we beat out.

I believe the last offensive lineman we beat UTEP for was KO. It looks like he is going to be ok.

If we can find a serviceable push rush, I don't think that would be too much to ask at all.

He is at a postion of need, for one thing. We are pretty thin at center with just Alvarez. Knapp was injured and I've heard rumblings that it could be pretty serious. And Johnson graduates, so he isn't even an option anymore.

For another thing, this kid is a power lifter. He finished 7th in the state of Texas in his classification. Texas is nuts for power lifiting.

He's ranked a 69 on ESPN's scouting service, which is pretty good for a center/guard.

Wempa was also named first team all-state for Class 3A in Texas. Here's an excerpt from a Greenville, Texas, newspaper story on his selection: "Wempa led the blocking for an offense that averaged 47.5 points and 475.1 yards per game in the regular season. Wempa, who repeated as an all-state selection, had 52 pancake blocks and did not allow a sack in 303 pass attempts."

I believe he played right tackle for Royce City. At least that's where he was in some of the videos I've seen of him.

Knapp's a question mark. He's still on crutches. Sucks too, worked his way up from walkon.

I wouldn't read too much into that. Anthony Walker was an Oklahoma state power lifting champ and never saw the field here. Jason Fiacco is also a very gifted power lifting champ and I don't know if he would be starting at center for us if he was still here (don't know that he wouldn't either, but it didn't get him on the field fast enough before he quit).

This, I would read something into, and yes, he is at a position of need.

    Re: new commitment coming Wed.

Seems to me like McFarland has a pretty good read on OLs. They were definitely young this year, but it seems to me like he hits on a good percentage of his recruits. Haughton is going to be very good, as is KO. Baysinger, Hicks and Alvarez will be solid players. I think that we'll be surprised by Burris this spring. He's going to push for a spot in the two-deep. Klerekopper and Blaes are the two that look like "misses" so far. But they were signed when the staff was scrambling to fill a class right after they were hired. So I'm not going to kill them on that.

Bottom line is that Chizik and McFarland have earned some trust for scouting out OLs. If they think Wempa is good enough, I'm all for it.

Chizik said on one of his call in shows that he still expects good contributions from Klerekopper at tackle down the road, but that he needs more time to develop. I took that to mean probably not next year. If it takes until '10, he would be a RS JR. Getting 2 years of game competition from an OL isn't all that bad.

The reason the staff liked Knapp so much was because he had quickness, and could run. They could do a lot of things with that. Okay, so Wempa is strong, but does anyone know if he has the kind of quickness that Knapp has?

    Re: new commitment coming Wed.

Article in the Ames Tribune confirms this as well.

Mid-Iowa Newspapers - Football: Texas lineman to commit to ISU today
McFarland's visit is set for 7 p.m., and Wempa hopes to have everything wrapped up before the offensive line coach leaves his house so he can officially call himself a Cyclone verbal commit by the end of the night.

"We are going to talk it over when he comes down," Wempa said. "I can't wait for the meeting."

Wempa played offensive tackle on a 7-4 Royse City team that made the playoffs. ISU plans to move the 6-foot-3, 285 pounder to center. Wempa said he will play where the coaching staff needs him and that he doesn't expect the transition to a new position to be much of a problem.

"Tackle is the hardest," Wempa said. "It should be easier moving inside. You get help there. I'll just have to work on snapping the ball to the quarterback, but that should come with time."
