U of I for an Iowa State fan

I have a question for all of you:

Have any of you ever been put in the dilema of being a die hard Iowa State fan, but considered or went to graduate school at U of I? While I hate all things Hawkeye, their graduate programs (I am looking at law school) have a great reputation. Those of you that have done it, have you found it difficult being an ISU fan in that environment? Any advice?

You'll be fine. I know on e of the old coaches at ISU whose son went to Iowa law school and he didn't have any issues. He said it was extra nice when ISU would win.

I know people who had much hatred for Iowa that went to grad school there. I see nothing wrong with going to school there if they can offer you something to better your future.

I have lived it here in Iowa City (not on campus) for 24 years. Cyclone plates on my car and bleeding Cardinal and Gold. It can be done. Hold on to your convictions. I'm sure you know a Hawk fan there on ISU campus. Same crap just in reverse. Of course we know we are the pride of Iowa on MANY fronts.

Re: U of I for an Iowa State fan

grad school doesn't count. I took a couple classes towards an MBA at Iowa because its close. besides, the typical raving sqaukeye fan undergrad doesn't get into grad school... much less a well regarded one.

It is quite the shock when they give you an "@uiowa.edu" email address ... it burns the soul.

If you want to be a lawyer or human doctor-go to Iowa, if you want to be an engineer or animal doctor-go to ISU. No matter the spors affiliation, do whats best for your professionally. Although I would consider Drake over Iowa for law

Iowa law is ranked much higher than Drake law, and all of its acceptance criteria are much higher. Can't say I know how much stock employers put into that stuff, but with the job market as it is it can't hurt in making yourself marketable.

Re: U of I for an Iowa State fan

I agree that grad school doesn't count. Most people form their school allegiances in undergrad (or before that even). I know plenty of people who've gone through graduate school with little to no allegiance to the school's athletics.

If you want to go to medical school, go to DMU in Des Moines. If you want to be a lawyer, go to Drake. If you want to live in an ivory tower, go to U of Iowa.

Re: U of I for an Iowa State fan

I never considered it, but I grew up farming and wanted to work Ag as a career so they wouldn't have benefitted me in my career by going there, thank goodness.

If you want to be in a career where you get more benefit going there, then don't let your sports allegiance get in the way. Team allegiances look a whole lot more serious on these message boards then they are in reality. If I wanted to become an attorney, then between the two schools u of i would be the best.

Long story short, don't limit yourself in your career planning based on your allegiance to a certain sports team or dislike of another team.

Ivory tower sounds nice...as long as I can afford my mortgage.

Do it. Make the best decision for your future as possible, regardless of your sports affiliation.

Maybe think about Drake if you are dead set on staying in Iowa. They teach a lot more Iowa law. But I sure wouldn't.

The thing to remember is that Iowa Law is a very good school. People come from all over. Nobody in law school cares if you went to ISU. In fact, a lot of people will have gone there. It's hard to believe, but even undergrads don't seem to care about ISU outside of a few days a year. There are a hell of a lot of Chicago kids that just don't care. Even then, most law school students spend their entire 3 years in one building. Eating at the Hillcrest dorm is about the only time I interacted with the unwashed masses.

In fact, it's probably better to be from ISU than Iowa. I went to Iowa for both and when I entered law school my routine was already pretty set. When I had time to go out, it was with people I was friends with for years. People have a good time making friends and study partners during that first semester. And it's good for your career to know a lot of smart people.
