Was there any payload on the jet? I'd have to believe that if there were than there would have been a much larger blast(s).

f-18's are getting old. Unless they have upgraded the f-18 and I was unaware.

This looks like it's in the hills by MCRD.

The top gun reference was nice. He was trying to land at Miramar.

"The movie "Top Gun" was based on the Navy fighter pilot training program at the Miramar facility"

    Thanks CNN

I've in this location for five years and I've never seen a loaded plane. I know the Navy does live-fire training at that the Channel Islands, but I don't know if the Marines participate.

I doubt it had live loads, thankfully.

Ok, so that begs the following question. Do weapons have safety devices that would keep them from blowing up in an incident like this?

Miramar is in the La Jolla area and MCRD is about ten mile south in the Point Loma area. I didn't see or hear the crash, but I've heard it's just a mile or so away near University City High School and the UTC shopping mall.

What kind of safety device would you like? The bombs jettison parachutes and then sprout mechanical legs to run away from the firey wreckage? On second thought, yes, I do want that.

    I don't know. I would hope so.

I have no idea that's why I'm asking. Common sense tells me there is something that would trigger the inner fuse in the missiles right? And that they wouldn't automatically just blow up if they hit the ground.

I would guess that if they do maneuvers with loaded planes they steer clear of residential areas.

I'd be half inclined just to shoot down a plane just to see this.
