    Cubs Owner in Trouble

Tribune Co., in debt, could be flirting with bankruptcy - International Herald Tribune

    Can you say Chapter 7/11?

Sounds like the Tribune/Times people better move the Cubs as fast as possible.

Hard to believe the newspapers including Tribune, LA TYimes, and New York Times are collapsing. At this rate, most major newspapers will be bankrupt by Mar with the lack of advertising revenue.

Well if they wouldn't have dragged their feet and been so damn greedy.

If they would stick with reporting and leave editorials on the editorial pages their readership would not be as weak. Also, they refused for YEARS to respond in anyway to the online migration of ad dollars and let themselves get behind the 8 ball.

    Let 'em die.

I agree. The only newspapers I read are the ones that are free.

And also the right course. I laugh at their demise. Shoving editorial comment down the consumer's throats under the banner of news has finally come home to roost. Continually insulting half your readers is eventually going to result in them looking to other sources for their news, and their add dollars are going to follow.

    Re: Cubs Owner in Trouble

The Tribune got into trouble because they are so incredibly levered as a result of Zell purchasing the company and using debt to finance the acquistion. It was unlikely that they could finance the mountain of debt even with good business conditions.

    Re: Cubs Owner in Trouble

Basically the large companies do not have the capital now to spend on big expensive ads. These revenues collapsed in Oct. Look for Miami Herald, LA Times, NYT, Chicago Tribune, and 20 others to be like the banks - essentially insolvent unless people or govt keep their line of credit open.

Wonder if the fallout will be a cheaper owner for the Cubs and less money spent?

    Re: Cubs Owner in Trouble

While I would love to attribute the demise of some newspapers to their editorialization of the news, I think it is more accurate to assume that the tremendous variety in forms of media have caught up with them at last. I know in my position, newspaper/flyer/radio/tv/community programs etc sales people are just relentless, and I think it's because they have to be.
