    OT: DSL

I have DSL through Qwest and also phone service. Thinking of cancelling the home phone and going strictly cell. That doesn't mean I have to find another ISP, does it?

As I understand it, you can still have DSL through Qwest without a landline phone.

No. I had a stand alone DSL account with Qwest before I moved to Ankeny last summer. I was pleased with it.

Yeah you can get stand-alone DSL, though you might have to pay a bit extra for it over what you pay for just DSL now.

    Correct.

We just dropped our landline at home and have DSL with Qwest. We just lost a $5/month discount and were assigned a different account number - that's it.

    Re: OT: DSL

Also, there are NO taxes or fees on Standalone DSL accounts. I pay $46.99/month for 3 mbps DSL and that's the ending balance on every statement.

    Re: OT: DSL

I decided to just keep our land-line and just get rid of long distance. I think it just ends up costing a couple of bucks after getting the $5 discount.

    Re: OT: DSL

Another thing that Qwest doesn't really publicize: you can get a measured phone line that gives you an allowance of minutes per month. It's a lot like a cell phone plan. You pay a monthly amount for either 3 hours or 6 hours of usage, and any minutes used over your allowance are charged at a per minute rate. We rarely use our landline but don't want to get rid of it completely, so we recently switched to the 3-hour plan. I forget how much it is, but it's definitely less than a regular, unlimited-use landline.
