    Rick Hartzel

Did I hear right that Rick Hartzel is reffing this game. There is no way he should ref an ISU game or a Greg McD game. There are way too many reasons he shouldnt. Not saying he is doing a bad job but sometimes there are people that shouldnt ref in some places.

    Re: Rick Hartzel

Rick always has and actually I think it was one of the reasons he and UNI parted ways. He wanted to be an AD and ref. If you look for him, you'll see him on some of the ESPN games.

By all accounts, he a good ref. Yeah probably a potential conflict with Greg, but what ref in the country doesn't know a few coaches?

I haven't seen him ref a game with Greg in it yet.

I agree, should not ref a game Coach Mac is coaching. To many conflict of interest problems if a tough call late in the game.

    Re: Rick Hartzel

It's not nearly as bad as when he was reffing and still AD at UNI but I'd still rather he didn't do our games.

    Re: Rick Hartzel

Hartzell has had a conflict of interest every time he's reffed a game over the past few years. Why should things be any different now? That said, Hartzell is about as good as college refs get. I'm sure he's calling a fair game, but there shouldn't even be a hint of conflict of interest.

If he is a good ref, none of the past will get in the way. You don't get to that level with being bias.

Why does anybody think he ever had a conflict of interest? He never refed games for programs or conferences he was directly connected to.

    Re: Rick Hartzel

When UNI was on the bubble for the NCAA tourney just about any game we reffed had potential for a conflict of interest. I have no reason to believe he wouldn't be fair but there should be an effort to avoid any potential conflicts.

    Re: Rick Hartzel

Didn't Hartzell officiate G-Mac's first game at ISU? I'm thinking he did.

When did he ref an ISU game? I can't find any on this site.

Also, I worked for Heimerman as an intramural ref and never knew he reffed college athletics.

    Re: Rick Hartzel

I vaguely remember a Iowa game a couple of years ago, I believe it was also against UNI but I can't remember. Anyway it was a very snowy day/night and one ref could not get to ic so they called Hartzel in.

Guess it depends on what you call a conflict of interest. UNI recruits against plenty of schools, including ISU. An ISU loss COULD help swing a recruit one way. If ISU was a constant bottom-dwellar and UNI was making tournament games, that could be a reason to pick UNI over ISU. I think that it should be illegal for ANYONE employed by a university or a booster ref a game in the same division. If they want to ref, do a lower division game.

Now that Hartzell isn't at UNI, I don't have a problem with him reffing. BUT, he could still have an issue with ISU for taking GMac. He probably shouldn't be reffing any games with ISU or UNI in it.

Heimerman refs some ISU exhibition games, but I don't think he's ever done a real game.

If you worked for him and didn't know he was a college ref, you must have been sleeping during meetings. He's actually moving up the ranks. I know he did some early NCAA tournament games last season.
