    Div 1 playoff

I apologize if this has been posted, didn't see it anywhere yet. Dan Wetzel has a pretty good idea for a playoff system at the D1 level. While I'm not a proponent of the playoff idea, he makes a pretty good argument. Not sure that the big-time bowl games would agree with him though.

Boise State, in the 8-9 game, TCU, and Ball State could sneak up on USC...

In the second round I could see Boise beat Alabama

    2. Oklahoma def. 15. Tulsa
    7. Texas Tech def. 10. Ohio State

    3. Texas def. 14. Boston College

    Second Round
    1. Alabama def 9. Boise State
    5. USC def 4. Florida
    2. Oklahoma def 7. Texas Tech
    3. Texas def 11. TCU

Damn, that was nearly as much fun as picking the field of 65. A true playoff needs to happen. That was a great article.

IT works at every other level.
Wartburg is playing in round 3 of D3 this week. Guys leave early every Friday like any other road game. No reason it wouldn't work for D1.

Well, the problem will be not including the current bowls in the playoff, especially the big ones. I see no effect on bowls like the Holiday, Sun, Gator, etc.

As long as the conferences can still figure out a way to get their hands on the same amount of $$$, they'll be on board.

Agreed. I've always thought an 8-team playoff would work best.

    1) It would be an upset of huge proportions of a team outside of the top 8 were to ever win. It should be difficult to make it into the playoffs in the first place. Perhaps there could be a "bunny bracket" or something for undefeated teams not in the top 8. Going undefeated is great, but teams like Ball St, Utah, and Boise State need to schedule tougher nonconference games to get that bump in the ratings.

    2) There would only be two extra games for the two teams in the championship, and one extra game for semifinalists. I think this would be a more gradual change than a proposed 16-team playoff, and would have more chance of getting passed.

    Re: Div 1 playoff

I liked the article. Well thought out. Great job on explaining the "northern-teams'" mindset as well...i.e. cold weather-grit...etc....every northern team usually needs to go south and play now in the Bowl system.

Does everyone really think that those terrible conferences should always get their champ in though? That could be up for debate.

This plan could work. I would change one thing though....and this is just for those that just love the classic BOWL games. Have the first 2 rounds played at the higher ranked seed's location. (ex. the 1 seeds.) Then the Final 4 could begin at a neutral site. (Game one at the Fiesta Bowl. Game 2 at the Orange. Still call them "Bowls." And the winners move on to the Rose. Then...rotate the Bowls for the next years....and so on.)

    Re: Div 1 playoff

If every conference had a legit chance to get a team in the playoffs you would see much more parody, just as in collge basketball. If Boise State was almost assured of a playoff spot don't you think they would get more recruits than some lower tier BCS schools? I think it would be a very fair plan...

    Re: Div 1 playoff

So this basically means that the SEC and Big XII championship games are irrelevant. Oklahoma-Texas was irrelevant. USC-Ohio State was irrelevant. Texas-Texas Tech was irrelevant. Iowa-Penn State was irrelevant. Ohio State-Penn State was irrelevant. USC- Oregon State was irrelevant. Florida -Ole Miss was irrelevant.

Pretty much every regular season game was irrelevant to seeding his bracket. I'm sorry, I just don't buy that it wouldn't ruin the regular season.

And what happens if Missouri were to beat Oklahoma and win the Big XII championship? Are you going to tell me that Oklahoma couldn't win that bracket? And if you're telling me they could, even if they lost the Big XII championship game, then do you really have a true "national champion" any moreso than you do now?

And so you DO put them in there, are you really telling me there should be 4 teams from the Big XII in the bracket? There is NO way that the BCS conferences would let that happen.

I'm sorry but just throwing a tournament onto the end of the regular season does not give you any more legitimate national champion than the BCS does.

You mean kind of like that big basketball tournament in March?
