My wife is from Venezuela and all of her family lives there. Her father was stopped by the police once while driving and they threatened to seize his car unless he paid them a certain amount. You can't even trust the police there.

Chavez has really turned that country into something awful. If you are one of his loyalists, then you have nothing to worry about. But if you're against him (as most educated Venezuelans are), then you need to watch your back at all times.

We have workers here from Venezuela and they agree totally with your wife.

Yeah, I think kidnapping is in the top 3 "industries" in Mexico. Seriously.

I had to travel to Cuernavaca (sp?) a few years ago for a large meeting for my company. There were several of us from all over the states going there, so we all flew into Mexico City at the same time. We were met by an armed escort and driven to a private hotel/compound in armored SUVs. For the few days we were there, we didn't go anywhere w/o the escort. Needless to say, I was happy to get back to the US.

The reason for all the security? One of the senior executives from Japan had his son kidnapped in Mexico City a few years before that. Before our trip, we all received memos from corporate warning us to not wear expensive looking clothing and jewelry, so as not to draw attention to ourselves.
