    Downtown Skywalk

    Downtown experts...

What are some of your favorite places to frequent over lunch that are accessible via the skywalk? Options on both ends of the spectrum would be nice (quick/cheap and of course an occasional place to splurge at).

Not a person that knows much about downtown at all and I'm down here on a 6 month contract.

BTW...not a Chinese or seafood guy. Otherwise, all is good. Doesn't mean those suggestions can't be made here - others may like 'em. ;)

I think Des Moines is the Skywalk capital of the world if I remember correctly. I like Stella's diner I think it is as their malts and shakes are amazing. I ate at 801 Grand for a hella nice steak dinner...I think it is a cigar and chop house but it is really expensive

Johhnys, of course you have to walk out of the brewery and across the street, but at least you do not need a coat.

I also love king low over by Java Joes, great cheap chinese. I kinda wished I still worked downtown, I loved just walking for lunch.

Yeah, I'm familiar with 801 Grand.

    Won't be going there often.

There's a great sushi place (Zen) at 4th and Locust (I think). It's really good.
Right across from there is a cheap Italian/pizza place that's not to bad if you like to avoid chain restaurants.

    Is scruffys still around?

I think both brew pubs are accessible now arent they? (maybe you have to go across the street to Raccoon River?)

The sports bar looking place that used to be in Locust was pretty decent too.

Its been a loooong time since I had lunch in the skywalk though.

Nothing to see here mods. Keep moving.

Here is another tip for the skywalk. Don't give money to the guy playing the bongos. He plays the same thing over and over and it's annoying.

    Re: Downtown Skywalk

Basil's is the Italian place in 801 Grand. Good but usually a really long line.

El Azteca is a great Mexican place over in Capital Square. Just go through the Kaliedescope to the east and into the huge atrium and it's on your right. (Former Stella's location)

Otherwise, the South Union Bread Co. is an awesome place for sandwiches. It's in between Starbucks and Centro. Go to ING and walk out the front atrium and around the corner.

Scruffy's closed over a year or 2 ago I think but they made a darn good pulled pork sandwich!

The food court attached to the old younker's building and across the street from Quizno's has a couple good spots. There is Gazalli's that makes good gyros and pita sandwichs and some greek salads. Golden Chicken is there that has some good meals, try the Chicken Wrap and Pork Tenderloin!

Something Italian is right around the street from the kaliedascope food court and has some great pizza and italian sandwiches and meals. kaliedascope food court has Maid Rite, Subway, a pizza place, a burger place, a pretty good mexican spot, thai, and 2 other spots that make some decent specialty sandwiches.

South Union/Centro is about a block off the skywalk and has some good stuff too.

Stella's closed a LONG time ago and is out in Urbandale/Clive area now. There is a pretty good mexican place there in the skywalk now but it's usually pretty busy.

    Re: Downtown Skywalk

South Union, definately. I used to go there at least once a week when I worked downtown. Here's a hint, though: call in your order in advance, and then pick it up and either take it back to work or, if it's nice out, eat outside somewhere. The lines there can eat up your lunch hour if you don't call in advance or somehow manage to beat the rush.
